I'm looking around for an old single neck Fender, either 8 or 10 string, but with the old skinny pickup (not the wider ShoBud-style pickup) and a cable undercarriage. Sunburst finish would be great. I'm not concerned about how many pedals, 3 or 4 is adequate. I'd also be interested in having some knee levers installed.

Thanks for reading!

Hey Chris, small world. I'm already checked in with Billy Cooper and some of the major dealers, so I'm starting to put up a few wanted ads. Hope all is well!!

Dave, none of the 10-string (cable-operated) Fender pedal steels had the wide pickup, they all came with the later, skinny, Jaguar-style pickup, as did all the 8-string models made after 1963. So, what you're looking for is a '64 or later Model 400 (S-8) or Model 800 (S-10) with the original Fender pick-ups.

Well, actually I'm a total Fender newbie-- I assumed from seeing pics that the Jag pickup was older and the wider one was a Sho-Bud (my main guitar is a '75 Sho-Bud Pro III Custom). I'm not interested in playing a Fender as my main instrument, just as a specialty thing for fun and for sessions where I want an intensely retro sound. Not even sure if I'm going to play it E9 or start fooling around with Kleinow's setup. Any advice is really helpful!!

If you want something different, then the Sneaky Pete setup qualifies. - GP
