I am going to be in Honolulu Aug 9 & 10 before I going to Kauai from the 11-17 for a friends wedding.
I am going to be solo with time to burn those 2 days Honolulu.
Any suggestions where to check out some good Music? I would love to check out some good Hawaiian steel playing.
Any suggetion for both Islands would be great.
Thanks Dave |

Check out the Moana and Halekulani Hotels in Waikiki for Tuesday and Wednesday.
You'll miss Alan Akaka with Genoa Keawe. They perform on Thursdays only.
On Kauai, Ken Emerson at the Sheraton, Princeville. As always, call to confirm. Entertainment always changes frequently here. |

I was at Halekulani's House Without A Key about a month ago. If you can't get an invite to a family Luau, the Halekulani Hotels is a next best lovely setting to hear live Hawaiian music. |

No one here in Hawaii makes luau's on a weekday. Why? Because most people are working. It's usually done on a Saturday or maybe Sunday if reservations for a hall is booked.
Most groups that get hired to play for luau's don't have a steel player. In fact it's gettin' more difficult to even find Hawaiian music with steel guitar anymore; ask Ray Montee and Basil Henriques.[This message was edited by Derrick Mau on 03 August 2005 at 04:48 PM.] |

Very true. However in all the years gone by, anyone could just walk in at the Halekulani, find a table and order a drink, then enjoy some great music. Management in their wisdom now gives you the "third degree" at the desk...wanting to know which hotel you are staying at, your name, room number, etc., before allowing you in. Takes much of the "charm" out of the evening. (Or was it just me ?)

Keoki,
I don't understand your treatment at the Halekulani. He aha ke `ano?
I have been going to the House Without A Key for years and have never been asked where I am staying, much less what my room number is.
David,
One tip, I would pass along is get there around 5:00 to 5:15 pm and ask them to seat you in front by the entertainers because you want to hear the music.
It is always nice to say that you know the musicians - Alan, Paul, Bla, Harold, etc. Also maybe telling the host that you are a steel guitar player, fan, whathaveyou and you want to sit close to the front for the music.
Hang loose,
Don

Maybe if they gave everyone a key to their room they wouldn't need all that security.... |

I saw Cindy Combs (slack key) at the Hanapepe Cafe', Kauai, Was at dinner, they only do dinner on Fri. I believe and usually have live music. Really nice country dining experience! Art walk on Fri. as well. There's no liquor license, so if you want wine, bring your own. Excellent place for lunch btw if your driving to/from the canyon.

Dave, you just walk into the Halekulani like you own the place, that's what I do. Or you can tell anyone that asks that you are related to Alan Akaka!! |

Dave,
If you can check this post again for the next two days, I may have further information for you about Kauai.
I have a friend who lives in Kauai, I have e-mailed him and hope to hear from him shortly about who is playing there beside Ken Emerson.
Aloha,
Don

Well Don, it happened to us twice and really pi**ed me off! (I wasn't wearing my normal 'Billy the Kid' mask or carrying my six-shooter either). The first time, we just slipped in as we have ALWAYS done in the past 24 years, (as do most everyone who do not have meal reservations). We sat at one of MANY VACANT tables near the stage under the tree. The manager, (who was dressed smartly, very polite, but firm), came along and informed us we had "jumped the line" which came as a total surprise and embarrassement to us ! He then asked the questions I stated, (above), left and returned moments later to say we could stay at the table we had selected. I was ready to just up and leave at that point.
Next time we came, we stood properly in the line, (not wishing to be accused again), and prior to being seated, the questions were asked again...If I didn't enjoy hearing Greg on steel, we would have walked out. The lady asking the questions stated it was a 'new policy' of the hotel ... (?) Maybe they are in fear of saxophone terrorists slashing the strings of the guitarists with cutting pliers ?
Anyway, suffice and sadly to say it did happen. Perhaps I should have checked my under-arm deodorant more closely. |

Dave,
Jess Montgomery has not responded to my e-mail and you are about to take off.
He now has an unlisted telephone number which I do not have. I tried to reach him where he works, but I was not able to make the connection.
Jess plays lap steel and has a group that plays gigs around in the Kapaa area. He would also point you to some of other the local entertainers. Since you are going to be in Kauai for 6 days, it may be worth a try to contact him.
I believe that you can reach him at:
The Bull Shed
4-796 Kuhio Highway, Kapaa, HI 96746
(808) 822-1655
This is a good eating place also with a view.
Kapaa is on the way from Lihue to Princeville where Ken Emerson, steel guitar artist, is playing.
If I receive anymore information I will post it here.
Sorry I could not do more.
Aloha,
Don

If you're over on the West Side of Kauai on a Thursday night, go to the Waimea Brewery and catch the Kamainas. They are special. If you are lucky, Maliki will be playing steel. He is an old Niihau player, but has been sick, so he hasn't been with them all the time. All four of the guys can sing wonderfully. |

David,
I gave you the wrong restaurant above:
Check for Jess Montgomery at:
The Bull Shed
4-796 Kuhio Highway, Kapaa, HI 96746
(808) 822-1655
Tell him that I sent you and that he would help you out.
Jess is a great guy and a real authentic beach "boy", really into Hawaiian stuff, etc.
I hope that you get this correction in time.
NOTE: I HAVE CORRECTED ALSO THE ABOVE POST AND THIS POST AND THAT POST NOW ARE IN AGREEMENT.
Hoping that you have a great time.
I LOVE ALL OF MY HAWAIIAN EXPERIENCES.
Aloha,
Don
