Heres the MSA I got a few weeks ago. I loooove this guitar.....such a big change from my old ShoBud. The George L pickup sounds amazing, and quiet too.

What is the technique for playing steel while wearing a robe? do you use rubber bands or clothespins? Or is it part of your string muting technique?

A robe can be used thusly: the wide, almost bell bottom like sleeve can be used for "elbow muting" a technique I pioneered, or if beans were served in the catering tent, one could use the lower half of said robe in a fanning motion, to help dissipate noxious fumes during a performance.

Yeah, they do stay in tune very well...even after travel. This one was one of four made by MSA just before they shut down operations in the early 80s.....it was to be the "next generation" of MSA guitars. This one belonged to Reece.
So I guess it's kinda collectible. Definetly a keeper.

Hi Joe-Youre' a lucky guy.you got a good one there. It looks like the one that Richard Gonzales had for years. When he got his first Millenium, I tried to buy that S12 from him, but he wouldn't let it go at the time.
You will be happy with that one.....al.SmileSmile

Thanks fellas....I'm really proud of this guitar. The tone and sustain are incredible. Switching to the U12 was a big leap, considering I've never played a 6th tuning, but I've already learned alot from Sonny Morris, a Joe Wright video and also have a lesson with Reece in 2 weeks.
Its really nice to be able to play all those big fat jazz chords.
Very Happy

I thought it was about 1980 - bought from Billy Coopers - extra parts from Roy Thomas - it had sustain to the bone and a real sweet tone. Never should have let it go but I went back to D-10's.Enjoy yours!

Here's the one that got away for me. Early 80's burgundy lacquer 7+5 with built-in volume, tone and fuzz:

Boy, would I love to have that one back. It's in California now, in good hands.

Joe,

Here's one I bought from Dave O'Brien back in January. I love this guitar.

Aren't these MSA lacquer universals just beautiful? Especially the sunburst one. I think that's one of the true classic steels out of all the brands and models.
