I e-mailed Mr. West about his guitars early last month and haven't heard back from him. I only get his answering machine when I've phoned. I sent a letter earlier this week requesting an estimate from him. Does anyone know if he's out of town or on vacation ?
thank you |

Kevin...Elva is away, (in the eastern U.S.) for a few weeks. He should be back in Anaheim by early May. He wil reply to you as he does not ignore his mail. |

I've never had a problem getting a hold of him either by email or phone. But, like Keoki said, he's out of town right now. He did have a slight computer problem at the end of March, but he got that fixed before he went out of town, so he'll probably have your emails waiting in his box when he gets back.

I just bought one of Elva West's small, light, 6-string lap steels (Tradewind)with a 22.5" scale. It's my "back pack steel" for taking hiking, camping or to the park. Email me if you would like detailed info.

Hi Stan...Living in LA, you know first hand what a nice guy Elva is. I have 4 of his TRADEWIND guitars and each is well made. His latest endeavor, (which I don't have), is almost a duplicate of the Fender Stringmaster series. |

I have one of Elva's Faux Frypan's....Great little lap steel !!.....I love it !!......Elva worked with me on string spacing, and on pickup desired.....It's a little bit of an oddball lap steel as it's a 7 string, and the spacing is a little on the wide side....Elva came thru in spades !!.....Jim |

I agree...I have one of his fry pans also...(8 string) Great for hauling around as it is as light as a feather! |

James, I don't think seven strings is an odd-ball. Most of my Hawaiian buddies prefer seven, and my early Rick frypan and my bakelite are seven strings. If you play C6th, put a B flat on the bottom string, and you have a C13th tuning with a nice 7th chord to use.
Elva is a fine gentleman, and I use his fretboards on some projects.[This message was edited by Bill Creller on 04 August 2005 at 03:47 PM.] |

I have a D-8 Tradewind that is light as a feather...easy to take to gigs and sits right on the lap (no legs needed). [This message was edited by Jeff Strouse on 05 August 2005 at 10:59 PM.] |

Jeff...you probably have a similar model to my TRADEWIND D-8 which is made from light weight ash wood. I was able to pack my D-8 into a soft carrying bag which in turn fitted into a large suitcase when I went to NZ to play at the NZHSGA a few years ago. I played it through a Fender Twin Reverb owned by one of the members and it sure sounded great ! |
