I rehearsed recently with a band to work up some new numbers. Most of the songs were pretty simple 3-chord country or western- swing tunes, but we'd also chosen a few which were a bit more challenging harmonically - jazzy or bluesy tunes with some pretty expensive chords for a cowboy band. I still consider myself a learner on steel, but thanks to the C6/A7 tuning, I was finding augmenteds, diminisheds, add 9's etc, that fitted beautifully, and even some licks that sounded 'pedalled'. And when the double bass player (who studied Jazz Composition at University) called for a 7th sharp9 chord, there it was, under the bar! The more I get into this tuning, the more I'm amazed at how versatile it can be, especially for just a 6-string plank. It's a Sierra by the way, and sounds fabulous!
Tony.

I agree with you. that tuning is a lot of fun to learn on. Have you ever tried the A6 tuning? It's got a very nice full sound to it.

It's a great tuning and one of many wonderful gifts to the steel guitar world from the master of touch and tone, Jerry Byrd. We sure do miss him.
