Has anybody experimented with putting their own sound post in a reso? Considering the talent some of the craftsmen in this forum have, somebody must have fooled around with the idea.

Put them in an archtop, right behind the bridge. One on each side. Really improved the sustain of the guitar.

Don't know exactly where the best place on a reso would be.

Don't know that putting soundposts in a reso would do anything. Might even dampen bridge vibration, and thus cone movement. I HAVE stuck "soundposts" in archtops, too, to try to get 'em to stop feeding back.

Well, the forum has quite a complement of professional resonator guitar builders, so I would defer to them. I think it could be done, but it might depend on how the instrument is constructed.

FI, if the reso has a soundwell, I don't know if there is any place to put a soundpost as the cone lip sits all around the well.
If it's an open chamber model and the cone just sits on a ledge, then you could probably put soundposts between the back and the ledge. Might even improve the resonance.

I don't believe that would be too hard to do. Perhaps you could just remove the cone and size the posts to fit under the ledge.

Some models have a post and baffle construction and already have a soundpost[s] fitted for it.

Hi,
Jerry has the right questions and ideas. I could answer any questions you have with a quick phone call, emails take to long to communicate. The resonators current construction would determine what rout to go with.

Todd builds beautiful looking and sounding resophonic and hawaiian guitars. http://www.clinesmithinstruments.com I'd love to own one of his resos one day.

My financial state being what it is, I'm considering one of the cheaper open chamber brands and installing a Q cone, nut, bridge, etc. I hadn't thought of the soundpost idea until you posted this, Gary. Sounds like a great idea to me. I think the soundpost is like a 5/16" or 3/8" dia. dowel rod of maple or other hardwood that is fairly reasonable and available.

Thanks for the idea Exclamation
