The Second Annual Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival will be held in Dover, NJ on Saturday, October 8th.
This is a great honor to Joseph Kekuku, the man who is credited with the invention of the instrument we all love.
Dover is the burial place of Joseph Kekuku. This event is sponsored by the Dover Renaissance, Inc. and the Dover Area Historical Society.
There will be an English and traditional Hawaiian graveside ceremony at 4 p.m. at the Orchard Street Cemetary.
Following that, the historic 1906 vaudeville-era Baker Theater will be the location of a social hour complete with a dinner buffet. On stage, there will be line up of steel guitar performers and entertainers from Hawaii.
Contact George Laurie at 973-361-6205 for complete details.
For travel and lodging info, contact the New Jersey Chapter of the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association at 973-729-5158.

Jeff, thanks for posting this information. It serves as a nice reminder to some of us.
There will be a contingent of Hawaiian Steel Guitar Assn. members from all over the nation and Canada, who will be attending the celebration in Dover honoring Joseph Kekuku. At this point, I cannot say how many. There are a number of HSGA members around the Dover area who most likely will attend.
Hope it becomes a big event.
Aloha,
Don

Joe-
This looks like it will be an historic event in Dover. Glad to hear you're talking it up on the air. I just received (7/27) an e-mail from George Laurie:
"Today's Morristown Daily Record has a nice article along with photos about the 2nd Annual Joseph Kekuku Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival in its PLUS Section. This PLUS Section may not be in every Morristown Daily Record since it is a regional section."
Thought I'd pass it on!

Jeff, so glad to see you supporting this event. The music from Hawaii is still my very favorite of all. Wish I could go to this historic event to share in all that wonderful music from the Islands.

I'm happy to say that the Moonlighters will be headlining the performance festivities this year. I think my desire to do this pushed it over the edge. It is definitely an honor to do something for the memory Joseph Kekuku, a man who's legacy is so important to all of us.
I will post information on this event on my website when it becomes available.
