The core of the problem would be worms. It'll never bear fruit.
Sorry. |

Pete, permit me to take a bite out of this one (kidding):
As a rule of thumb, I believe the hardest wood with the lightest weight is better tonally for all musical instruments. This is what makes rock maple and some of the other maple woods so hard to beat.

Apple weighs about 650 kg per cubic meter, but can weigh as much as 850kg. So, it would be a gamble as far as weight goes.
At the lighter end of the scale, it is about the same as White Ash and quite a bit lighter than Hard Maple or Oak. White Oak weighs more than Hard Maple when dry, but Red Oak weighs less. The reason there is because Red Oak runs about 100% moisture content when green and Maple runs about 50% a nd Ash goes around 30%. Maple appears when green to be lighter than Oak but it generally, but not always heavier.
The biggest concern with Apple would be how well it dries in the kiln. I've never dried any. It is hard to find a straight piece of Apple, but it would make an interesting project. |

Mmmmmmmm... I bet it would smell nice!
Actually, I'm off topic a bit here, but, though I'm not sure about how well it works as a tonewood, I CAN tell you from experience that you will smoke the BEST pork ribs you ever ate using applewood. IMO, applewood, or even pearwood for pork just makes it. DEEEEEE-licious! Crabapple wood works just as well, too, if you can't find apple.
Bon appetit!

I should have expected some of those Delicious responses, although my Granny Smith could have done better. Thanks, all. Probably will turn to Ash or Maple - when in Rome . . . .
