I was wandering around the MSA site this morning and found this:

Though it talks a little about pedal steel you can use all of this information on non-pedal as well.

I think this is some of the best advise for the player who is struggling. Zen guitar said: two steps forward and one step back is still moving forward!!

I have noticed a difference in just a short time tring to program my brain to move ahead of the song. I am nowhere near two seconds but it has helped.
