Well...he just won steel guitar player of the year at the ACM Awards. That pretty much means he's gigging with everybody. Very Happy

From what I understand from another Nasville in the know steeler, Mike is pretty much the #1 recording guy there now. No one deserves it more.

Most of the stuff I'm responsible to learn is Mike's stuff. All of Daryle's stuff is Mike. Pete's new CD is Mike (and very humbly, me), and I do believe he may have done some of the stuff on Jeff's CD as well. Want to be a better steel player? Work on Mike's stuff for a living like I do. It's definitly challenging and VERY rewarding! I don't know how he comes up with it, I'm just glad he does. I've never had the pleasure to meet Mike but Big D says he's as nice as they come.

Super nice guy and player as well. Wife, Joannie is a fine person also and sings and plays bass as well as anybody. Anyone gets a chance to see them live at a show is in for a treat. One of my favorites along with JH.

I guess because I listen to so much of the newer music but I can tell when it's Mike about 80% of the time. I hear brand new songs on the radio, guess who the steeler is and then look it up online to see who gets the steel credits just to make sure.

I met Mike around 1982 when he came to Roanoke
Rapids N.C with Bill Anderson. He said he had just
came from the Emmons Co. where he picked up the
red push-pull he is still playing. He told us his wife picked out the color. He is one of the nicest
guys that I have ever met.I was delighted that he
won the ACM award.I think he is one of the finest
pedal steel players on the planet.I Have always
been a huge fan since I first saw him years ago on
the Nashville network on You Can Be A Star.So Mike
if you see this CONGRADULATIONS ON WINNING THE
AWARD.Your playing has always possessed that studio
quality about it that only a very few have.

Mike has a 2 song cd , I'll Fly Away which he smokes the strings on steel, pedabro and dobro and In the Garden he plays beautiful. He told me a couple years ago in a e mail that he was planning on a full cd but I guess studio work has slowed that down. A great player and sure gets the tone out of that Franklin too.

Very true, and an astute observation. Mike used to have his own wonderful toneā€”the thickest, darkest push-pull tone I've ever heard. What happened to it? If he now is a top dog steel cat, maybe he could go back to it.

Mike played the Opry friday nite before last. I hung out with him after it was over. He was A-Bing his Franklin and his Emmons on the new amp system Peavey put in. We were almost the only ones in the building.

He also played a gig this past Friday nite down on Broadway at the Wheel with Robert Lee.
Wish I could have been there to see that. James Mitchell was on guitar. I am sure it was just SICK what they played cuz both of them are monsters.

I was downtown that night and ran in to Mike; I was only able to stay at his gig a short while but it was nice to see him playing out where he could stretch out some and of course he sounded great (he had the red Emmons).

I was also at the Opry when he played the other night; he was "subbing" with the staff band for Tommy White, wasn't he?

He plays some nice stuff on the brand new "Big and Rich" CD. But I think my favorite thing he's played on was the Louvin Brothers tribute album that won a Grammy a few years back, one of my favorite country albums in a LONG time and of course Mike sounds wonderful on it...

I concur with Pete on this one. This is the CD which has probably spent more time in my car player than any other over the past few years, and if someone is riding with me I'll say to them: "Listen to this guy Mike Johnson on the pedal steel - he's incredible!"

There is also some killer dobro work on that album by Randy Kohrs.

Carl Jackson put that project together, and did an outstanding job. A must have CD for anyone that enjoys legitimate country music!
