Microsoft has released Automatic and manual Windows and Office Updates today, for all OSs from Windows 2000 through Vista, fixing 4 critical, 1 important and 1 moderate vulnerability. Additionally, MS Office Service Pack 3 is available for those who need it.
A full description of today's bulletins and patches is found here
As usual, should I discover any problems that arise from any of these updates I will post about them as follow-ups or new topics.
One of todays updates patches Internet Explorer 7, which means it will change the executable's CRC code. This may set off alerts and blocks from various firewalls, until you allow the updated (changed) IE 7 to access the Internet and remember your decision. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

I'm getting hit with windows updated today..5 already. I just sit on needle and pins when they do this. Seems i always have one problem or another after they run their updates. But i am allowing them this time anyway, i never see any difference from before or after my puter works after going through all this business. Not sure i will keep updating or not. Seems like a pain, for little effect, and a lot of problems. Maybe i have the wrong idea here???? |

If you refrain from allowing Windows Updates, be prepared to run as a Limited User, to protect your computer from hostile takeovers, and only browse this website, and pray that hackers never manage to sneak in a redirection script, in the forum's php files, to hostile downloads hosted elsewhere. Ditch Internet Explorer completely for Firefox 2.x, and then 3.x when it is released late this year. Ditch Outlook Express for Thunderbird as your email client, or use web mail from Hotmail Live. Do not accept email attachments or view images in email messages for your protection, in case they are rigged with an exploit from which you will not be protected.
Additionally, be sure you are running the latest version of the best anti-virus and anti-spyware protection you can afford, and at least the free version of ZoneAlarm Personal Firewall, from Checkpoint. Always keep the security programs updated, which sometimes means daily checks. Scan for threats daily.
Or, buy a Mac, but you still need to accept critical updates from Apple, as they patch vulnerabilities that are exploitable by nasty people and scripts. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum
