Greetings Very Happy
a fellow here, who has a new Carter Starter tells me he
has an "X" lever (RKL) that lowers string 5 : B to Bb
works fine & it's in tune
Now when he has pedals A&B down & he applies lever "X", string 5 goes down a whole tone rather than that half tone :
C# to B rather than C
this fellow is far away from me so i can't get close to his steel & have a look myself
could it be the travel on the rod & bellcrank slot ?
i've never had a look see under a CS yet either
any suggestion or help from you Carter Starter gurus would be greatly appreciated ?
Thanx Very Happy

When the A & B pedals are engaged and you lower the 5th string to Bb you have changed the pivot point for lowering with the raise/lower lever from the raise stop to the B-C# tuning nut. This causes greater movement where the lever connects to the aluminum control finger for the same amount of travel by the lowering rod since the pivot point is now further from the rivet.

Would this not mean that he should tune the B-Bb lower with the A pedal engaged, instead of when it's open? I'm not familiar with the starter either.

Thanx for yer reply John F
i kinda understand it but i admit not having understood the solution

Mike W, the fellow has tried to tune the X lever w: A engaged
when he releases all, the open B is out of tune

Dickie, w: pedals A&B at fret 0 it's an A chord w: a C#
he gets a B instead of a C when that X lever is engaged

"tried to tune the X lever w: A engaged

This tells me that the lower on the B string is already "activeted" lowering the B string even when the lever is not engaged.
What he need to do is.... without pressing any pedals/levers, back off the nylontuner that lowers the B string (while playing the B string) until the Bstring stops raising in pitch. Then retune the string to B and verify that the lever lowers the string to Bb.
Press A pedal and engage lever. If you have to screw in the nylon tuner to get the resulting C note the Bstring will be out of tune when you release pedal and lever. This means the pullrod lowering the B string don't move long enough and need to be located further away from the crossrod in order to have enough travel.
