I noticed that B Dorian sounds very Indian on C6 and reminds me of the sound tracks I've heard in Indian movies. E mixolydian pentatonic sounds very Indian and covers the whole C6 neck from the second fret on the low C string (b7th) to the 24th fret on the high E string = E G# A B D E. Notice the tritone between the G# and D notes. CSNY had their Bruce Palmer tuning that was supposed to be tuned like a Sitar (all E notes except for a B)(Sweet judy blue eyes, etc). Does anyone know of any other popular scales for getting a strong Indian sound?

From an interview with Harry Manx that ran in AG Magazine:

Can you use a standard guitar to play any Indian passages?

Yes, I can. Indian slide guitar is a whole world unto itself, and it’s an approach to notes that’s different. They have something in Indian music called the meend. The meend is how you approach the notes, like from above or below or right on it. They play in a circular fashion with their left hand. Once you learn the meend, you can do it on any instrument, really. It’s an imitation of the vocal style.

Are there any examples on the album where you play the Indian style with a regular guitar?

On the second track, “San Diego-Tijuana.” It’s a very simple song that goes from D to Eb the whole time, but I try to move it into a morning raga on a regular guitar. I also use the veena on that song, but you can distinguish between the two rather easily.

"The Meend", that's a new term for me Andy, thanks.

I've noticed that on B dorian and E mixolydian pentatonic where you have a half step between the notes, you can hit the lower note and slur up to the higher note and back down real fast to the lower note in a kind of slight circle and get that emotional Sitar effect by doing this. That must be the "Meend"? My friend has a agreed to us getting a tabla drum for her to play so we can jam out on this Indian vibe stuff. The contempory Indian movies have great sound tracks for coping the vibe and some licks for this style of music. I'm amazed how easy it is to play on C6 lap steel, pretty cool.
