I think that you get what you pay for? I have an "Elite Seat"That I have doweled and epoxyed every screw hole on it and I'm getting ready to put new foam on it...But then again it was the cheapest one I could find.I saw some at the Mesa show that were really great,I can't remember he name?

Do any of them have some sort of extending handle and wheels for ease of use? The only reason I haven't sprung for one yet is that they look like just one more heavy thing to lug around either by hand or with a dolly. All my other stuff - Steel cases, gig box (absolutely essential - might do a separate post...) and amps are on wheels.

The worst is an off-brand imitation, the name of which escapes me, which I bought in the late 70's and have only recently retired. Piece of junk, and it amazes me that it never fell apart on me. But it didn't, and I guess I got more than my money's worth out of it. It's still sitting in my music room full of junk that accumulated over the years. If there is ever an official contest for the "worst" I'll enter it and will win. These days I use a high-quality keyboard seat and carry my gear seperately in an athletic bag. But some of the seats I see today look beautifully made.

As I write tis, one is being designed. Thom Beeman of Steelseat.com and I recently discussed this very thing, and he agreed that this would be an excellent idea. I don't know how long it wall take before such a seat is available, but at least it's in the works.

Well, normally I don't post things like this, but the worst seat is/was the old Sho~Bud seat, though at the time it was the best because that's all that existed! We used to add backs to them made from the folding seats you would get for sitting in football stadiums.

I bought my first Steeler's Choice seat in 1988 and never looked back. I still have that one, which still looks great, but now I have two others, also by Steeler's Choice.

The ones from Steelseat.com look pretty good as well. The bar (excuse the pun) has been raised on the steel chair business.

Herb,My "Elite Seat" is about the same quality as my old Sho-Bud seat that Lucky Oceans brought to me from Nashville for $44.00 in 1975.

My old Sho~Bud seat has a weak cushion which is hard on the butt. However, it is about half the weight as the other, newer brand I used to own. I sold the newer one because it was about 50 pounds when full. I've heard similar complaints about the newer seats. The Sho~Bud seat, even when packed with gear, is light as a feather, maybe 20 pounds with volume pedal, cables, Boss pedal, etc. And it is sturdy. I wouldn't trade it for a newer one, because of the ease of transport it affords.

........But it is too damn short!! Smile

Gosh, I've got an old Sho-Bud seat I love. It has the bigger emblem on it -- I haven't seen another one like it, actually. The sad thing is that it lasted a few decades with the original owner with no tears, and somehow I put two holes in the top seat cover since I've had it. Glad that hasn't happened to the pad on my GFI S10.

With apologies to our Sho-Bud sitting brethren, tke reason why the Sho-Bud seat weighs less than a modern seat is because they used less metal and thinner wood. They painted the inside of the cases rather than upholster them with ozite or velvet. They used inexpensive individual hinges rather than full length piano-type hinges. They didn't use automotive-type fabric, they used black naugahyde. They didn't have metal edge trim, and they didn't have heavy lumbar support. And they didn't have a power strip. So being as the SB seat was basically a plain box on legs with a piece of foam on top, rather than a multi-featured tool, what seat IS worse than a SB?

Any roadie worth his paycheck could destroy a SB seat in one year. Wink

Herb, I had one of those old Sho-Bud seats. It had only a single latch on the front and with the bad hinges you describe the lid/seat would shift when the seat was being carried and the darn thing would work itself open and dump its load.
I gave mine away on the Forum six or seven years ago and even paid the shipping just to be rid of it.

I've had my Sho-bud chair since 1983. I've recovered it once, put a new latch on the front, put a piano hinge on the back, re-foamed the top and it's still goes to work wih me. However, I'm looking at upgrading to one from SteelSeat (the heavy duty road type) soon.

(As Herb mentioned), In 1983 there were not many to choose from. There was the Sho-Bud chair and the Emmons chair that I remember - but the only one in the store was the Sho-Bud, so I took it and was glad to get it.

I am quite happy with my Elite seat. I also have a Steelers Choice which is a great seat that is blue so when I play the blue LeGrande II lacquer guitar I usually load up the blue Steelers Choice. I usually play a black guitar so I most always use the Elite and it has served me quite well.

My experience with the "ELITE" seat has been the same as Mr. Schulman's. I think I failed to read the fine print that said, "no screw shall remain untouched by the customer", when I bought it about 3 years ago.

The old Sho-Bud seats were terrible, in my opinion. The single latch and the hinges were very light-duty. The latch on mine popped open many times, spilling my accessories onto the ground. A hinge snapped off after a few months of gigging 6 nights a week. Eventually I installed heavier hinges and a good latch and the seat lasted for a couple more years.

My Elite Seat (purchased used from a forum member) has been just fine. Love the backrest and the extra room in it.

My "Elite" doesn't have a back rest,it's probably their cheapest one,I have repaired it some many times that there is probably more epoxy, and Elmer's Ultimate glue on it than wood.. not to mention new hinges, and constantly tightening the legs, and the handle...and that little wood thing in the middle that holds the rods that connect to the legs,it looks like one of my high school wood projects, bad chisel work?what else is on it?

GFI is my main working seat even though it is not made as well as my steeler's choice. The GFI uses little crappy hardware store latches that don't stay closed and the way the legs are attached is pretty lame. They are only secured on one side of the legs so they get loose and stop being so functional. But it holds all my stuff and is pretty small and light. I just tape it up and throw it on airplanes and don't worry about it. I have not been able to destroy it. If the legs get screwy I just bend them back. I also have a steelers choice seat with the side kick and back rest. Its a beautiful thing. But it doesn't fit near as much stuff, is way to big and weighs a ton.

I understand the complaints about how much the Steeler's Choice seats weigh, but I look at it this way. How much time do I spend carrying the seat versus how much time I spend sitting on the seat?

A couple minutes carrying time... really only lifting since my steel, and seat, roll to the gig on the wheels of my amp's flight case... opposed to hours each night of sitting on the thing.

No comparison. I'll suffer the momentary hardship of transporting the thing. Of course, YMMV.
