I just downloaded Acronis and put it on my and my wifes' computer. I got a download for ea computer. Thanks for that suggestion.
Another question tho. The computers are both hooked up to the same internet line. At one time in my network places I could access her C drive and she could access mine. Both computers have the C drive as shared.
The network places will not bring up her drive nor mine on hers. I've tried to get them into the mshome group but no deal. Any ideas? Thanks.
Actually my intent is to take her b/u file to my G drive so I can burn hers and my b/u at the same time to the same CD. |

Ken;
I have a large amount of information about networking on my website. Look under the section about Sharing Files for help.
One thing you can do right away is make sure that your router has assigned IP addresses in the same subnet and IP range. Open a command window on each computer (Start > Run > CMD), then when the command window opens type: IPCONFIG and note the IP address, Subnet and Gateway IPs.
Most routers have an internal IP address of 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1, and they assign dynamic IP addresses starting at one number higher, in the last octet. So, the first computer to be turned on might get an IP of 192.168.1.2 and the second one may be assigned 192.168.1.3. The subnet is usually 255.255.255.0, which allows 256 IP addresses to exist.
If both computers are on the same IP range and subnet, try pinging the other one from each computer. From the same command windows type: PING 192.168.1.X where X represents the IP assigned to the other computer by the router. This also assumes that the router is at 192.168.1.1. Otherwise, use 192.168.0.X (number of computer). If you can ping both computers from the other one it narrows down the problem to File Sharing Permissions, or the Workgroup Name, or a lack of currently shared folders on one or both computers, or inadequate credentials on one or both computers. If you use Windows XP Home you should enable Simple File Sharing, assign shared folders and try again.
The rest of the information you'll need is on my networking page, linked to above. I don't have time to go into this any further right now and am about to move half way across the country. I'll check back here tomorrow to see if you still need help and what you have tried to do to correct the problem. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Well, I could not ping either computer from the other one. It sent 4 packets, 0 were returned, 4 lost.
I down loaded Network Magic. I like it and will buy it if I can get access to the router. It says it wants name and password. My son just put the new router in and said he didn't give it those things. He gave me a number, but N.M. still wants a name and password. I have to get to the router to add my wifes' computer and so far no luck.
He's coming over today and maybe we can straighten it out. By the way, the computers were the same in the sub net and .102 and .106 on the IP. I could't find what to do with no ping on your website.
I found the ping problem was the XP firewall. By turning it off I could then ping the computers. My wifes' computer is still not in my network places and I don't know how to add it. |
