I need a wizard... here we go:
Windows 98SE, burning photo files to CD-R's to open up hard drive space. First two CD's, test by grabbing photos not very important, burn fine, no problem. Get to serious biz, granddaughter, Dad's 90th b'day, etc... all zapped. Didn't record, deleted, just gone. That's why I'm going to puke. I know they still exist on the drive, but I need data recovery to get them back.

Michael;
There are undelete programs available for downloading; some free, some commercial. Google for keyword phrases like "recover deleted files" or "undelete deleted files" or " file recovery program." All of these terms will return a wealth of information to help your situation. Be cautious about downloading and installing unknown software. Check downloaded executables or zip setups before activating them. Scan for viruses and spyware immediately after installing a program from an unknown source. Also, set a recovery point just before you install the program.
Hmm, have you tried using System Recovery from a previous time before this happened??? _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Mike:
I researched this not long ago and found that "getdataback" is one of the most respected do it yourself progs out there.
I have not personally used it, but you can get it here:
http://www.runtime.org/products.htm
Here is a blurb from their FAQ. The license key they refer to is $69, but it looks like you don't have to pay anything to use the demo and go far enough to find out if it will recover your stuff.
We recommend that you download the demo version of GetDataBack first to see if your files are recoverable. The demo version allows you to perform the data recovery and to see and verify your recovered files.
A license key is then required to actually save these files. Once you have a license key for the software, you don't have to run the program again, just enter the license key in the demo version to enable the copy function. |

Mike, my computer crashed not long ago and I had to but a new one. A State of TN computer whiz said he couldn't get to anything on the old drive. I took it down the street to a little shop in Smyrna and the llittle Korean guy plugged that sucker into a hub and got most of my files back and put them a CD for me. Cost me $10. If you want to give him a try, give me a call. I am in the Lavergne phone book. Good luck.

Got to move up from Win98. I used to have multiple crashes yearly. Haven't had one yet with my XP. Did your friend used to be in Ballie And The Boys, or is that a different name? _________________ -johnson |

To those of you still using Windows 98 computers to browse the Internet, I strongly advise you to get a new computer running at least Windows XP with Service Pack 2. Vista will be a shock to you, but XP should be recognizable. The hardware requirements are more intensive under XP, and much more under Vista.
The reason you should upgrade is for your own security. Microsoft has stopped offering any security patches for any part of Windows 9x, as have most manufacturers of security software. This leaves you out in the cold and mostly unprotected against a plethora of threats lurking in the Wild, aimed at computers such as yours.
If you must continue running Windows 98 or M.E. you should search for an anti virus program that is still compatible with your OS and is still updated for new threats, plus Spybot S&D, SpywareBlaster and a firewall. The simplest firewall would be a hardware router between a broadband modem and your computer, but it only protects against incoming threats, not outgoing. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum
