Well, here I am again struggling with this thing. I seem not to be able to play AVI videos. I go into the Quicktime configuration window (which always puzzles me because it is what comes up, containing its statement of "registered to Apple", even though I get there by going through Quicktime Alternative on my All Programs list), select "File Types", and all the check boxes are blank. I check all the video-related boxes, and "Notify me if other applications modify these associations", click "Apply", then "OK". I attempt to play the video, and it either won't play or Windows Media Player starts to play it for maybe one second, then stops and says "WMP has encountered a problem and needs to close". When I go back into the QT File Types list, all the check boxes are now blank again! Confused Question

When I installed QT Alternative, I first uninstalled the full Quicktime (that came on the PC) and then restarted Windows before installing the QT Alternative. If you didn't do that, it may be part of the problem.

Windows Media Player should be your choice for media types other than Quicktime or RealPlayer proprietary formats. WMP seems to handle them pretty good. If you don't have the latest Windows Media Player, V11 download and install that. If anything else is missing you may need an additional Codec.

Here is a link to free AVI codecs. I can't vouch for the site, just that I found it doing a google search for free AVI codecs.
