I heard a fellow playing lap last night whose sound was quite unusual. Kind of ballzy with a mellow bark instead growl. When I got up close to look at his set up I saw a Gold Tone copy of an Oahu lap steel with black tapped wound strings (open E).He says the bar flies across them. He was coming out of an older Roland CUBE 60 with reverb amp that was also lined out to the PA.
Anybody out there ever tried these strings

Hi. Yes, probably what you saw were Black Diamonds. I've never used them, but know someone that has, and he likes them. I guess they took a bit to get used to tho. Here's a link. There could be another brand of them, but I don't know. http://www.blackdiamondstrings.com/

I think you may be referring to La Bella black tape wound electric strings. These are used for Jazz guitar. A bit of a mellow tone.
I've never tried them but you're never too old to learn!

Thanks Dan. Great CD's. I bought one for a friend who plays uke at Greenfield Village in Dearborn Mi. I'm sure he will enjoy it.
An old friend of yours, Mark Gottlieb works with me and told me about it.

DR makes a set of black coated strings that are closer to what you are describing. I have used them a few times but am partial to the Pure Blues set for my Tele- the coating doesn't do it for me.

I tried those Black DR strings, they should rename them "ToneKillers". They effectively take the bite out of the string, absolutely terrible product, pure garbage.
