I don't know about trying to use a single condensor for drums, but Earthworks has a drum kit that uses three condensor mics and a kick drum mic. Most of the other kits use individual mics for each drum.

I have no intention of using one single overhead mic for drums. Our drummer has a complete set of drum mics and mixer. I'm looking for information on the overhead. I have information but wanted some opinions here.

I have seen Neuman U87s, AKG 414s, and other larger diaphragm condensers and also small diaphragm condensers such as Neuman KM84s and Shure SM81s used for recording. Live I seem to see the SM81s a lot.

Kevin,I know a very cheap studio trick..not sure it will work live.Hang a one of those boom box cassette records over the cymbals and set it on record, run a stereo line out and leave it!there you go stereo overhead condenser, and it works.

I've got a pair of those Russian made Oktava MKII small diaphragm condensers. Perfect for drum overheads.
