I read an interview with Charles Mingus recently where he very briefly discussed having played in Alvino Rey's big band, and the impact this had on him. I know it's a long shot, but does anyone know about any existing recordings of Rey's band from the time Mingus was his bassist? The thought of Mingus playing with a steel guitarist makes you wish he had done something like that in his own groups, huh?

I know there are recordings of Mingus playing with Lionel Hampton not long after his sideman stint with Alvino Rey, and at least one was a Mingus composition: "Mingus Fingers". This was a while before he had a national reputation as a composer/bandleader. It would have been interesting to know his thoughts on the steel though... |
