I acquired a Lace pickup this year which I have been very happy with although I think the height requires a bit of adjustment since the signal seems a bit weak compared to my lap steel and recently started cutting out. The instructions suggest adding multiple layers of double sided tape to raise/lower the pickup from the strings. Has anyone tried making a more permanent mount for these pickups? I am a bit hesitant to start drilling anything into the top for fear of altering the tone of the guitar (although maybe the tone is not all that delicate). Advice would be welcome.

Hi, William, maybe try something like adding a solid shim of plastic or wood (to the bottom of the pickup) to just less than the correct height, then use the double sided tape to attach to the guitar body...

Mark - great suggestion. That would solve the problem with the double sided tape supplied with the pickup since it is too narrow (only about 1/4") to be very stable. The alignment of the pickup to the strings is a bit hit or miss so a bigger plate underneath would give it a bit more lateral stability.
