Saturday nite (6-18-05)the Austin City Limits show (C-Band Feed) featured a fellow (whose name I can't remember) and his band was called the "Innocent Criminals". He played several lap steel guitars (6 string or more) with a Stevens bar and was really flailin' away and sounding great. The one lap steel was a hollow body that looked like a gourd. Anyone know the scoop on this guy?

Ben plays a variety of instruments, the acoustic you mentiones is a Kona copy, he has 3 and I am not sure which one that was. He plays Asher guitars and a few others; I'd give a lot to acquire any of his rejects. He is a real innovator in terms of tones he uses to get his songs across, especially the effects. Not a lot of them, just well placed and appropriate to the tunes.

What he played were REAL vintage Weissenborns--a "teardrop" variation Style 1 and Style 4. I've watched the show hit-and-miss two or three times and have yet to see a Kona. (If there is one, Konas are deeper and have seven-fret solid-, not hollow-necked.) I'm not sure what some of the recent custom electric lap steels other than Ashers are, but I know a lot of BH vintage W's and K's personally. (Some of the collection is coming up for sale through the Claremont Folk Music Center. They're also advertising in Vintage Guitar Magazine lately.

Ben Harper always seems to have a Weissenborn hanging around:

You can check out some of the guitars in his arsenal here.

Did you see his bass Player? WOW!!! Not the kind of bass I'd want for my country band, but for the music they were playing, very funky! The bass player did a solo that lasted three or four minutes, and it was something!
