I'm thinking about purchasing an acoustic guitar from a luthier in the UK. What is the shipping process for entry into the US? I'm assuming it will have to clear US Customs at some point and I'll have to pay duty on it. (Anyone know what the rate is?) If FedEx ships it, for example, will it be shipped to my door and the FedEx driver collects the Customs charges from me or is it held at a Customs facility in the US and not released until I pay the duty directly to them. As always, thanks for your help.

Jeff,

I work in a music store doing ordering and recieving in Canada, and I often have to have items shipped from the US. The shipping companies charge significantly more than they should, and UPS is the worst. Fedex is not a lot better in that respect. I use a freight forwarder and broker (two separate companies) that saves us a LOT of money, but these folks only bring goods iout of the US. I'm sure you can find someone who does the opposite. I'd suggest trying a Google search for freight forwarders and/or customs brokers. Once you contact a broker, they can tell you what percentage of the goods' worth will make up the customs and duty charges.
