Here's a few observations on my recent visit to Austin. First off, yall play LONG sets. I saw three bands and they all played two hour sets. First night in town we went to Buddy's Place to hear Justin Trevino. Justin is one of the best singers I know of, and holds nothing back when he performs. Craig Schmidt carried a heavy load as the band was bass, drums, and steel and he did a fine job. In a trio setting like that, one has to dig deep to find stuff to play, and he really made it happen. It was nice to meet Forumite Ron Sodos as well. Friday and Saturday nights we went to the Broken Spoke and heard James Hand and Dale Watson. Cindy Cashdollar was with James Hand and I was really impressed with her playing; my only other time to hear her was with a very tightly arranged band that allowed very little freedom. Dale Watson had Don Pawlak on steel and he sounded great; very Mooneyesque to my ears and totally right for the band. All in all, a nice but too short visit. We'll be back. _________________ Williams Keyless S12U, MSA Millennium D10, Acoustic Image Clarus SL-R, Marrs 1x15, JW 1x12 |
