I have an older BW 1201 in which the foam dust cover on the magnet breather has disintegrated and fallen into the cone. I took the magnet off, and the foam has turned to brown gunky crap, and is all inside the magnet and on the backside of the coil bobbin (not on the coil itself). This seems to be a common phenomenon, because nearly every older BW I see, the foam has fallen into the cone. Anyone know how to get this stuff cleaned off? I thought I had a blown speaker, but I think it's just this stuff dragging on the magnet.
Thanks,

Yea, and after you clean it, if hear some type of scraping sound, it's very possible that a tiny chip of magnet material is hanging around in the gap somewhere. Masking tape folded back on itself is sometimes good at grabbing the magnet flakes. Compressed air is good too.
That link to the old post on the subject should contain all the info you need.

Finally, I can be of some help here even though I am an electronic dummy.
I had the same problem you describe, I tried lacquer thinner, various solvents, even gasoline. Nothing worked.
Then I said what the heck and tried rubbing alcohol with a Q-tip. Viola, the stuff will dissolve and come off. Then do as Brad Sarno recommends.
After I cleaned the speaker, I noticed NO difference in tone. Hope this helps. |
