Phil and I were woking together in Nashville when he died, there were two other forum members also working in the band at this time, this guy Phil was one of the greatest ever, this clip proves a lot of this statement,

I got to know Phil when he lived in Dallas, he and Maurice did some recordings together.. what a great guitar player, we at MSA built him his first pedal set up on his guitar... He is missed by many. |

Phil was about 5 years older than me but we grew up in the same small town in northern California. The town is Olivehurst. It's about 7 miles south of Marysville and 50 miles north of Sacrammento on Hwy 70.
I couldn't believe how he played Atkins. I picked all I could then but when I saw him tune his guitar to a slack G and capo up to the 2nd fret and pick Black Mountain Ragg, I knew I had to play that too. I never even came close to playing like Phil. Not even close!
Phil played a Tele. and I played a 54 Strat. Phil turned his amp in on a new one and I went down and bought his old one. I still have that amp and the Strat. today. Phil had one of his old belts as a handle on the amp. I still have that too.
Phil was a friend of mine and I still miss him today.

About 35 years ago I was 17 and was playing in a typical garage rock band in those days.
One day,an old friend who many of you blues and rock guitarist may know (Buddy Whittington w/John Mayhall and the Blues Breakers Band)wanted me to come over and listen to this crazy country guitar guy Phil Baugh.
The look on our faces was priceless as we sat there listening to Phil wear it out. |
