What is the standard 8 string C6th tuning, and the string gauges to use? Here's what I thought would be:
A
G
E
C
A
G
E
C,or
G
E
C
A
G
E
C
A
Just a different inversion.
Let me know what your tuning is. |

Kenny,
I like to use the second version you have there. It is really just a Emmons 10 string version of the tuning with the 2 low strings removed.
From low to high...
A C E G A C E G (sometimes I de-tune the high string to D for some songs...)
Cheers!
Mark

Why do 8 stringers have a high g but on a 6 string a high g is "too thin"? |

Has anybody seen the booklet "60 Modern Tunings For Eight String Steel Guitars" put out by Paul Bigsby in 1953. I bought it when I got my Gibson Console Grande in 1953. I think it was the first more or less comprehensive booklet on 8 string tunings. While it doesn't talk about string gauges, it was quite interesting for its time. I still have it.

KENNY,I am not sure that there is such a thing as a "standard tuning" for a steel guitar, but, the most prevalent non-pedal C6 is (hi to lo) GECAGECA. Second to that is (hi to lo) ECAGECAF. JERRY BYRD used a hybrid tuning C6/A7 which was something like this (hi to Lo) ECAGEC#A and he also often tuned the 7th string to C. I don't know why he didn't use an 8-string version of this tuning, but as far as I know, he didn't. The possibilities are as endless as chords themselves. The main thing is to select one and start practicing.

from high to low: E-C-A-G-E-C-Bb-G. As far as i know, nobody uses an A string on top. [This message was edited by Dan Sawyer on 02 June 2005 at 12:30 PM.] |

Jerry Byrd did use an 8-string C6/A7 tuning: Lo-A—C—C#—E—G—A—C—E. This can be retuned to other variations, such as D9/A6: Lo-A–C–C#–E–F#–A–C–E or B11: Lo-B–A–C#–D#–F#–A–C#–E
