I listened to the Cumquat CD
Hula Lady this morning on the way to work. This CD features Dick McIntire's Harmony Hawaiians without Dick McIntire due to Dick's health problems. Bernie Kaii sits in on about nine or ten cuts.

Bernie is incredible. Does anyone have any info on him? More recordings?

Hi Gerald,

Yes, Dirk Vogel has/had many 78's of Bernie and I think he put them all on tape before he sold all of his 78's. Bernie did a lot of work with Danny Ku'uana. You can send him an e-mail and he may bring some to the Winchester gathering -- there may be a minimal charge. He is out of town this week -- will be back on the weekend.

Yes, I have a complete info file on Bernie, pictures articles, tapes etc.If for some reason Dirk can't help let me know. Bernie did many projects with Ray Meaney in Frisco and there is where I learned of the B11 tuning. CC

Here's an album with Bernie and the Tavares brothers.

Bernie was also featured with a group called the "Polynesians".

There is a book written by Tony Todaro about Hawaiian musicians called the "Golden Years Of Hawaiian Entertainment". I recall a page of information on Bernie in this book. It's a must have to read and see. Lots of pictures. I can get you the information if no one else with the book comes forward.

Thanks all.

Derrick, I have the Todaro book and just looked in it. No go. There is a page for Ernest Kaai. Ernest is wearing what appears to be a military uniform and holding a mandolin(if I remember correctly, the book is 15 feet away from me and I'm too lazy to get up).

Bernie's steel can be heard on a couple of current eBay offerings:
eBay# 4737223181 and 4737341808 ("For You a Lei").
Keep an eye out for Danny Kuaana's "Hawaiian Holiday", Paul Page's "The Reef is Calling" and Lena Machado's Columbia Label LP that claims Andy Cummings & his Hawaiian Serenaders are backing her...other than two of the cuts it's Bernie all the way.
Bernie's a bit too heavy on the shmaltz for my taste.
Good luck on your hunt !

Gerald

I have a lot of Bernie's sheet music that was published by the Ball Music Publishing Co. back in the late 40's and early 50's. All are done in F#9th tuning. I'll bring them along to the convention this year.

I used to love to play his "stuff" when I was a kid. He wrote great songs.

The recordings he did with the Harmony Hawaiians are not shmaltzy at all, they are very swingy and bluesy. I can see your point if all you heard were the three cuts on the "Hukilau Hulas" disk. That was much later material.

But the "shmaltzy-ness" might make sense. Bernie Kaii's real name was Bernie Lewis and he was one of the few Jewish Hawaiian steel guitarists. (Shmaltz is Yiddish for rendered chicken fat, Jewish lard).

Any more Hebraic-Hawaiians out there besides me?

I agree, that Hukilau Hulas album is schmaltz up the yin-yang.

I think a lot of things from the old days seem a little corny to us now. Just watch an old western movie from the thirties or forties, pretty bad sometimes.

Here's how the 3 albums that Dave mentions looks like.

Dave, is that Bernie on the steel in Lena's album prior to Billy Hew Len?

Well, there were some 78's by Manny Klein and His Hawaiians, but since he was a leader/trumpeter rather than a low down dirty steel player, does he count?

I'm sure Manny Klein counts. Listen to his recording of "Maui Girl" with Andy Iona. HOT!!!!

Derrick, I'm not quite sure what you're asking me?

Expanding a little....

The Columbia LP "Lena Machado - Hawaii's Songbird / A. Cummings" ( collection of late 40's 78 rpm singles)-those picture you have posted, was recorded in LaLa Land with roughly the same group that cut the Danny Kuaana Capitol LP (Bernie, Danny, Lani, etc. - "Hollywood Hawaiians"). Except for the last two cuts on the second side. (suspense building !)
Different session, different backup band - not a mainland sound. Tommy Castro on steel is my best guess and beyond that - no say.
How Andy Cummings' name got this LP is a mystery to me.

Hope I've answered your question.

Hi Dave,

I wanted to know who was the steel player who recorded with Lena before Billy Hew Len.

Hello Derrick,

Info I've gleaned from the Lena Machado (Cord International) tape as well as various 78's I have show that Lena recorded with Sol Hoopii, Bernie Lewis, possibly Tommy Castro, Dick McIntire and probably a couple other steel players prior to the LP she did with Billy Hew Len.

My favorite Dick McIntire recordings are the ones he did with Lena.

That's about all I know.
