Its a Sierra Lap Steel...the first auction was Ebay auction #7320900088 which ended successfully on 12 May at $810.00 with the reserve met.

Now its relisted at #7324724579 with a starting bid of $700.00.

The seller has zero feedback...I wrote to the first buyer. Its just got me curious.

You might find one on the Instruments for Sale here on the forum. You wouldn't have to be a detective then.

The second auction states that the winning bidder on the first was a 'non-paying bidder' (deadbeat). I don't understand what that "private" is about with the winnder's feedback rating but I'll simply assume that he doesn't want people to know what his real record would be if it were compiled. If I were selling on ebay I would bar any 'private' feedbackers from bidding.

Howard,

I'm not shopping for another lap steel. But I've been watching this auction since before it sold the first time. There could be some virtue in detective work. Especially on ebay, where I've seen sellers sell the same item to more than one person, never intending to send it because they don't own it. They just rob the photo from another sellers auction and list it again and again. Many buyers are unaware of the various schemes that can be found on ebay. Any high-priced auction by a seller with zero feedback is worth being careful about, especially if the item sold before and didn't work out, which only those watching it the first time would know about.

I don't know whether this auction is a scheme or not, but it raises questions.

About a year ago I sold an expensive camera lens (it went for about $850) on eBay. At the time I had no seller feedback. When bidders inquired I gave them several references and internet links to my work. This not only put the bidders at ease, I had some very pleasant exchanges with the bidder who eventually won.

As a bidder, I would expect any "no-feedback" seller to do the same. Any seller with something to hide would certainly scare me off. EBay is a wonderful thing, but one must be really careful as there are many sharks lurking there.

This auction turned out well. The buyer got it for $700 and has left feedback, and he was happy. This is good.
