I have an old record by a jazz musician I admire greatly, Bobby Hackett, called "Hawaii Swings" (1956, Capitol). It's an attempt at Dixielandizing some Hawaiian and Hapa Haole tunes, such as Kohala March and Hapa Haole Hula Girl (with fairly poor results, although some of the playing is great). Anyway, Bobby's bassist, Bob Carter (Kahakalau) arranged the music and enlisted his brother, Bill Kahakalau to play steel. There's some interesting playing, for sure. I'll put some clips up when I get a chance.
Does anyone know of Bill Kahakalau?

Wow, I know Bill is father to Robi Kahakalau of the contemporary 80's group The Hawaiian Style Band, but I've never heard any of his music. |

I also have that old lp. I think it's great stuff. I love dixieland and this is a bit of dixie and Hawaiian combined. |
