I have a Tube works IVAC 65 amp head I bought from a forum member a while back and it sounds really good for steel. It's a 65 Watts solid state amp at 4 ohms , but I use mine with a single 8 ohm speaker and after cutting the mids and treble it's maxed out volume wise. If I use the send jack on the effects loop out to a power amp the signal is post fader , in other words everything you turn up or down on the source amp , whether it's preamp gain , master volume , reverb or tone controls is also going to happen to wherever you plug the send into . I can send it to a Tube works Mosvalve 962 power amp that has more watts/headroom. If I turn the slave power amp all the way up it distorts and if I turn it down halfway it sounds pretty good . Should I have the slave amp all the way and the preamp/power amp head turned down or the other way around for best results ? Right now I use the slave amp halfway up and the preamp 65 1/3 up on the preamp and 1/2 way up on the source amp master volume . I'm not sure what the proper protocol is here as I never have tried this before . Any tips welcomed |

I would max the volume on the slave amp and use the preamp/loop out to control the volume. This should eliminate distortion. Get yourself about 40% more volume on the primary amp by using a 4 ohm speaker rather than an 8 ohm also.

David , thanks for posting the suggestion . I'll have to go with a 4 ohm speaker to get a bit full power from the amp . I tried every setting combination of the master preamp , master volume and slave amp volume but there was always a slight breakup on sound that wasn't quite clean. I thought maybe the master volume could function as a sort of send level knob but there was enough of a mismatch in the setup that something was overdriving the input of the power amp . |

I have the same problem with distortion. I have a pre amp into an effects and from the effects to a power amp. I can run the power amp from half way to wide open and cut the input on the effects rack to about half way and get a sort of clean sound but I cant get it all the way clean unless I play at verry low volume on the pre amp. It may be the speakers, I'm doing this through 12" speakers. By the way the power amp is a tube amp. |
