OK,you can go to the music store, tell the friendly guy behind the counter that you want a set of strings for a certain popular lap tuning and he will(I hope)reach behind him and then plop that exact set on the counter in front of you.
But apparently, some combinations of six strings will work well with several *different* tunings, while other combinations (I guess) are not so versatile and will only work well for one or two different tunings?

Am I correct in the above statement?

On top of this, you can also buy the same tunings in many different gauges.

And common sense would seem to dictate that you could break strings or stress out the guitar if you tune too high while trying to use one particular string set for different tunings.

Confusing!

Is there a web site that breaks all this down, step by step for new players?I did not find a site when I searched Google that really explains it all.
Thanks,
Malcolm

John Ely has a nice string gauge chart on his website, you can find it here.

Can't get the string sets I want here in Lubbock.
So ordering strings from the forum, or Just Strings, will make it easy; tunings are displayed along with guages. It's harder to go wrong that way than at the music store, where they'll sell you what they got.

Order the gauges you need. It is easier in the long run. Once you find the tuning you want, most stores will order custom sets just for you. If it is a real guitar store and not one of the Guitar Centers.

As mentioned above, I use John Ely's gauge chart and it has always worked for me.

hope this helps

Ron
