Hopefully someone can help me figure this out. I have a problem somewhere between my amp and the volume pedal and can't figure it out. I think its in the amp cords, but not sure.
Whe I depress the volume pedal I get a scratchy sound. I know that people will say its probably your pots in the volume pedal have to be changed, because I did have an old Fender pedal and that was the problem. I changed them and it was good to go. Well, I am now using a new Goodrich 120 (well under a year old). So this should not be a problem, I hope not anway.
I am using the 3 cord patch running through a Peavey NV 1000.
WILL BAD AMP CORDS CAUSE THIS PROBLEM?? I don't have too many spares to change around, but the cords I do have when I change around, still have that problem. The cords when plugged in bypassing the volume pedal seem to work fine, that is they work and don't cut out when I run straight from guitar into amp.
Any feedback as to what the problem could be would be appreciated.

Al... It is most likely the pot. Now you know the reason so many of us have gone to the electronic pedals like the Hilton and Goodrich.
Todays pots do not stand up like the old Allan Bradley pots. Not to mention the cost ten times what they are worth. I will not spend over $25 for a pot that's not worth over $1.50....
I now use Hilton. I kept my old Goodrich 120 as a backup pedal. So far, in 3 years, I haven't had to use the Goodrich. JMO |

Probably is. I bought a new Goodrich a few years back and within 7 or 8 months I was using my old one because the old one was not as scratchy as the new one. I still keep both pot pedals as backups, but I don't use them anymore. |

TXS for the info guys, that sucks big time if its the volume pedal already. But to carry this a step further
I just started to notice a low humming sound out of my Peavey NV1000 when its idle but cords are plugged in. When I unplug the guitar cord, it stops. Any suggestions on this one. Could this be cord problems??

Try a different cord. The only thing that ever hums on my Peavey amps is the reverb. Also, what pickups do you have on your steel? |

Jonathan,
The pickups wouldn't be the problem. Because I run my other guitars through it and still has same sound.

Your scratch sound is the potentiometer in the volume pedal. I doesn't matter that its less than a year old. If your not using one of Tom Bradshaw's
pots get one. |

TXS for the info guys. I am in the process of ordering one of the Dunlop pots from Bradshaws site. Hopefully this will solve the problem.
But in the future I am going to take the advice of others and when the pedal goes bad next time I'll get a Hilton or comparable.

PS. What is usually the culprit that makes a pot go bad on a newer pedal? If not age, what, a power surge?? I didn't have a surger protector running through the amp. I do know, for sure. |

Use a different cord and go right from the steel, bypassing the volume pedal. If that works, then use the original cord. If the scratch is still gone, then it is the pot in your pedal. I had a Goodrich 120 that started getting scratchy after only 4-5 hours of use.
Switched to a Hilton and never looked back. |

There is NOTHING wrong with a Goodrich 120 if you have a good quality pot in it. I've had mine ten years and never changed the pot. Al, the newer pots that are going into the newer 120's are inferior quality. Bradshaws pot will solve your problem. |

If the volume pedal is scratching when you rock it, the pot's the culprit. Not a doubt. That's why I went with a Goodrich LDR. I couldn't handle the pot situation any longer. Although Tom's Dunlop pots sound like a great solution. It may sway me to get another Sho~Bud volume pedal.... _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars
