i finished my gibson 7 string conversion yesterday and got it strung up. i'm very pleased with the results. after going around with the tuner issue, i figured out that mandolin tuners would do the trick. the out side tuners of the mandolin tuner set were exactly the same distance apart as the out side holes on the peghead, so i only had to fill one hole and drill two.
i had new string anchor slots cut in the tailpiece exactly between the original 6, and that worked perfectly, although the machinist i took it to thinks i'm a nut (he's right!). the pickup is a custom made truetone that sounds great. jerry wallace is a pleasure to work with, and i'd recommend his pickups anytime.
tonight is it's first gig-hopefully it won't fly apart mid set.
now i'm going to see if i can add pictures...

John I have converted several six string guitars to seven, and you did it the same way that I do, including the mandolin tuners. I have done mostly bakelites, the post-war models. Sounds like you are happy with the conversion.

Very nicely done. I hadn't heard about this. Your adaptation of the tailpiece is very clever. What pickup is that?

thanks dan, it did work out nicely. at first, i thought about having a new bridge made, but it was way too expensive, and we all know who's mother necessity is.
the pickup is a truetone by jerry wallace. it's brighter than the old gibson pickup, and it gives a really balanced tone and volume across the strings. i played my first gig with it last night, and i was very pleased with everything.
