I want to order some rod stock from McMaster-Carr for experimenting with changes on a short headstock LeGrande.
What is the correct diameter and material? My micrometer says .109", but is the "correct" size actually 7/64" (.109375")?
Should I get stainless - which alloy?
The cheapest non-stainless rod stock is General Purpose Water-Hardened W1 Tool Steel, ASTM 686 for $1.50/36". There are many choices. What is the factory material? |

The size you are wanting is VERY hard to come by. I got mine from Ron Lashley. I just ordered 36" rod and cut them to length and threaded them myself. |

I measured the existing rods with a better micrometer and I get .110". No problem at all ordering this from McMaster.com (man I love that place!). It is simply a question of alloy. $1.56 for 36" aint bad at all, for the cheapest alloy.
Yes, I plan to thread them myself (looks like 6-32). _________________ "You call that thing a guitar?" |

The thread size might be 5-40, and this thread will give you more precision in tuning than a 6-32 thread will. I have used it for my Sho-Bud (7/64 rods) and my MSA (1/8th rods). |

Lynn,
I don't know if they have stainless in the size you are looking for but that's the route I'd go. Whenever I re-rod a guitar, I try and use stainless. |

That 7/64" dia. rod is actually very easy to come by and can be purchased with your credit card from Central Steel and Wire out of Chicago. I believe it's 304 SS. . .good stuff. Fine people to do business with. . .been around forever. Check out their website as it lists virtually everything they sell. Man, is that place ever huge!!! It probably ought to have its own zip code!!!

The thread size is #4-40 and you should use George L's nylon tuners which work admirably.

FWIW - #6-32 doesn't belong on steel guitar pullrods no matter what the diameter. |

A good grade of stainless to use is "303". It's easier to work with (machines and bends better) than "304". While some people might use a lesser (non-stainless) grade of steel, I prefer using something that's not going to rust in 5 or 10 years. |

You're right, Donny. 303 is probably the easiest to work with. For one-zy/two-zy jobs, I use 308 or 316 gas welding rod from local suppliers when necessary. It doesn't machine quite as well as 303, but close. Both have a fine sheen to them and won't rust. Be careful when/if ordering any 304. Some of that stuff doesn't come fully annealed. You will know right away that you're in for a bad day!! Always specify fully-annealed when ordering any stainless rod. Threading dies will last a long time.

304 and 304L are for welding, 303 is for machining. A #4 screw is .112". |
