Jeff Au Hoy Uses Violin Effect in his solo part
In the video about midway you have a good visual of how the violin effect is created by a masterful player. 
You can also hear Jeff's playing backup steel throughout the video with a lot of harmonics.

I should note that in order for "violining" to be properly executed, two crucial aspects must be observed:
1. The note must be picked slightly ahead so that when the volume is swelled open, it emerges on time.
2. There must be no sound of pick attack.
You'll notice from the video that I fail on both points... probably from a lazy right hand, the noise from the stage, and hesitation from timidity. |

| Very nice Jeff....Dick McIntire was masterful at pinky finger volume (violin) effect way back around 1944. Those were the days when volume pedals were an unknown commodity...very few were around, most of them were home made. A friend made my first volume pedal in 1945 from old sewing machine parts and a lever attached to a vol. pot! Worked like a charm. |

If Jeff means by lazy right hand that he was trying to get a more extreme violin effect by turning the right pinky on the knob more quickly, then I would probably understand what he is driving at. But for me the music did not need the extreme violin effect, but a moderate violin effect, his violin effect fit the music. IMHO
I have never seen a volume foot pedal control produce an adequate violin effect. I am not saying it can't be done, I just haven't seen it.
In my experience it is only accomplished as Jeff is doing it, with the little pinky.
