There's a bunch of great strings out there these days.
Which do you prefer....and why? Do you go mainly for tone, longevity, price....or what?

I usually buy D'Addario but have bought SIT as a second choice. As long as the wound strings are stainless steel and the price is decent I really don't care about the brand. I bought SIT from Musician's Friend and also strings from Frenchy's and Frenchy later told me they are the same. Have also bought singles, never sets, replacing strings only as they break. Since I never seem to break strings anymore, I plan on buying whole sets in the future and just replacing them all at one time.

I ,buy dean markley strings,for the quality I was breaking strings when I used D'addario so I started my quest for the better string, quality ,sound & price being the main consideration. When I put them under a magnifying glass you could see imper fections in the D brand [check for yourself!] & I don't buy them anymore. Jagwire is a big step in the right direction with the 060. shorter wrap on the ball end & they will get my money in the future, I change them every 2 months unless I'm playing out a lot.  I prefer mellow as opposed to bright & cost is not a factor ,as the prices on the forum cannot be beat! Thanks Billy Lee

I'm kinda like Greg on this one, although I do try to change the E9th set within two months or so, I am not hung up on any specific brand. I change the 5th and the 3rd every other gig so I don't really break them and they are always fresh.( two gigs plus weekly practice time in-between)
I have several brands of spares in my lug-a-seat they all work, they all work well.
I think I probably buy more COBRA sets than any other brand from bobbe S. than aywhere else. The price is good and the delivery is very fast. The strings are consistent, at least to me they are. I have used several brands, I don't really have a preference, but I don't want to spend $12 when I can spend $10 or less especially not really seeing or hearing a difference. Every now and then a small local music store has George L E9th sets for $7.95..What a bargain ! |

I always get my strings in bulk sets. SIT SS "Buddy Emmons" with an extra .11 for....$5.24 per set!

Definitely not! There are only a handful of manufacturers producing a wide variety of brands.
I don't know where Jagwire originate, but I'm very happy with their consistency. I use their nickel-wound on steel and electric guitar.

Was using GHS Super Steels for a long time, broke one occasionally; went to Jagwires, buy 'em here on the Forum, and they seem to have a little better sound to these tired old ears; haven't broke one since I changed, but that doesn't mean much as I'm not hard on strings & don't play as much as a lot of you guys do. FWIW

I cast my vote for George L's SS Nashville sets...E9 and C6. The quality is consistent and the package is purty! I never bought a bad product from the Geo. L's company.... plus, I just like Mr. Lewis and the girls!
I usually get 'em........or sometimes GHS super steels from Malcolm, other times, SIT's from Charlie Stepp. Gotta spread it around doncha know? I think it's b0b's turn next time. |

I'm ashamed to admit that I know this... but unlike other brands I've used, Jagwires last a very, very long time before breaking.
Even a 3rd string can be left on for many months of hard use and still be reliable.
I think most brands get their string stock from the same handful of manufacturers. But clearly, there are different grades of strings being produced. Jagwire apparently uses the strongest top-grade wire available. |

| I have tried them all in 60 years of playing. Frenchy's Silent Series (by SIT ) is my choice. I use the nickel wound, but they are also available in stainless. Jody. |
