Hey guys, I have a Compaq Presario. Long story short, I need the driver for my sound board. I bought the backup disks from HP but when I actually needed them they didn't work. HP says "so what." They wanted to hook me up at $50.00 to have some geek look at it on line. I told them to go take a hike. I repartitioned and loaded a copy of XP and everything is back up and running except my sound and a go to sleep funtion on my keyboard. Thing is my sound card is not a sound card, it's built right into the motherboard. I've checked HP's website for the driver but no go. Anybody have a model SR1711NX and willing to send me the sound and keyboard drivers? Thanks much!!! _________________ Whip Lashaway

The very reason I don't do HP/Compaq computers is this issue of driver availability. It is most unfair to honest but unwary customers. But that rant won't help any.
In Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager, the sound card device might show up with a yellow exclamation mark. RT click on the sound device, select Properties from that context menu, the select the Driver tab in that dialog box, the select Update Driver at the bottom. A Wizard dialog will open and you will have the opportunity to click in a radio button selection to Search online or something like that. When you make that selection, it will search Microsoft's most current driver database for a compatible driver.
Odds are it will not find one but worth the try.
If possible, buy a sound card, disable the onboard/embedded sound card in BIOS, and don't worry about it any more.
Is your driver CD unreadable? Maybe someone else has the CD.
In the mean time, here's a link to a driver that might work for you:
Download. Double click on it. Follow the instructions.
No guarantees but worth a try.
Just a suggestion. Good luck. _________________ Joe in LA

Check the backup discs you have. Two things to look for are "chipset drivers" (could say motherbord drivers) and whatever sound is on that Compaq Presario model.
The HP site didn't list any sound drivers separately so I assume they are on the backup set.
You could also download and run the Belarc Advisor, www.belarc.com It will profile your hardware and software and may identify what sound module you have. |

|
|
The Realtek sound driver my link pointed to is pretty much standard across this particular series of HP/Compaq mobo's and many other HP/Compaq's. If it would not load, Jack's suggestion about the chipset is a good place to look next.
Yes, John, it does conform to the AC97 specs that you pointed out and many manufacturers adhere to them. Or are at least compatible with extended features that makes their product "standout" from the others. Good point. One particular brand of sound cards did not adhere to AC97 and I stayed away from them because of many compatibility/configuration issues.
And as Jack pointed out, the main controller chipset driver for the embedded, onboard devices must be installed first before the other devices can be configured. Other common embedded devices are video, network, modem, and sound.
But since sound was the only device that seemed not to be working properly, it sounded like the chipset driver was picked up and configured on the XP install. But another trip to device manager will be the tattle tale with the yellow exclamation marks by the devices. By accessing the forum it seemed the network connection was working. But network might not be embedded. As well as video. A generic video will load but have very poor display qualities.
Of course diagnosing from a distance is like performing surgery in the dark<GR>! But eventually the right questions get asked and the solution will emerge.
If the Realtek driver won't install because you need the controller chipset driver first, let us know. I'm pretty sure I can put you on top of it if Jack's website can't find it. _________________ Joe in LA
