I installed the remagnetized horseshoes yesterday (thanks to Rick Aiello!) and treated the guitar to a new set of strings. It's a bit of a clunky player, but it sounds pretty darn good! Here's an MP3 made from the headphone jack of a POD XT into a little Zen Nano MP3 player (worlds smallest recorder?):

I switched the top string to D because I use it more than the G. Here's the current copedent and a new photo:
Looking good and sounding good. I'm a happy steeler! _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

Sounds good to me, that little amp is killer. It's like going back in time. I forgot to add, what great string seperation.
Have you played it with an amp that has more bottom end ?

It has a thin, Bigsby-like tone. The recording was from the Pod XT with my usual settings, so you can hear how it differs from a modern steel. I set the Princeton with the bass control on 10 and treble on 2. Actually, it can sound quite mellow with a thumb sweep at the center harmonic point.
It sits low and requires both feet on the pedals, so I don't use a volume pedal with it. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

The only one I've played was Herb Steiner's and yes, it sounded thinner than what I'm used to. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

Is that factory, or were the pedals added aftermarket? |

Bob, I would say that your impression of Herbs guitar, is not the norm.
It could be that you tried it with an amp that had a lower gain input, the Bigsby has a pretty low DC resistance and, hotter gain inputs are better.
Im not trying to fault your perception, but your comment, it has a thin Bigsby like tone, implies that Bigsby guitars are generaly thin sounding.
In my experience with them, thats not true.

Posted 16 Apr 2007 8:09 pm a surprising amount of chords for 8 strings & 6 pedals..
|
|
so far, i found these "chords" w/o using the bar, with grips skipping only 1 string and no slants. however, many of the chords require pedal combo's using both feet:
major = a, b, c, d, f & g
minor = a, b, d, e & f#
augmented = b & g
diminished = a, b, c#, d# & f#
major 7th = c, d, f & g
7th = a, b, d, f & g
minor 7th = a, b, c#, d, e & f#
minor/major 7th = c & e
major 7th flat 5th = c & f
7th sharp 5th = g
major 7th flat 5th = a, b, c#, d# & f#
diminished 7th = a, c & d#
suspended 2nd = a, b, c, d, e, f & g
suspended 4th = a, b, c, d, e & f#
there are still 7 suspended 4th and various 6th & 9th chords i need to check out. but I'll stop now in case everyone knew this but me
p.s. it was easier to type "#" than "b". |

It's factory and all original except for one of the pedal rods.
Dennis, the copedent I'm using is a subset of the standard C6th. It's not surprising to me that so many chords are available. I don't use most of them, I'm sure. I pretty much stick to 6ths and 9ths.
As for the tone, forget that I said "Bigsby". I will simply say that it reminds me of some of the sounds I hear on Nashville records from the 1950's, and leave it at that. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

Love that Rickenbacker.
It could replace a Clavinet in a funk band. _________________ Those that say don't know; those that know don't say.--Buddy Emmons |
