I use my Peavey Nashville 400 and my Vegas 400 in stereo.
The Vegas is wider than the Nashville and in order to take up less room on the band stand I turned the Vegas on its side.
The fluid and gook on the capasiters all ran to one side and now I'm stuck for the rest of my life having to keep the amp on its side or it won't sound right.
Every time I call Peavey about this they hung up on me!

Mike
I was playing in the Lounge at the Riversid Cassino in Loflin and Dave Musgrave at that time was playing Steel with Ray Price in the theater upstairs.
Dave and Ray were doing a radio deal in the lounge. When I took a break Dave told me I shouldn't turn my amps on the side because the oil would flow to the sides in the amp capasiters and would ruin my amp.
So I turned the amp on the other side so oil would run down to the other side. Dave told me he was joking. I told Dave I only turned the amp on the other side because I thought it sounded better sitting on its left side than it did on the right side.

Peavey's do not use "oil filled capacitors". I don't know what was leaking but it's not oil from caps. Consumer products have not used oil filled caps for years.

The "eletrolytic" filter caps in the power supply may be leaking (and the Vegas is old enough that it probably has leaky power supply caps that need replacing) but it shouldn't be enough to cause what you are seeing.

As a side note, did anyone tell you that you could pass for Jimmy Pepper's brother? (There's several pictures of Peppers on my web site's pictures section www.gulfcoaststeelguitar.com )

ADDED: Check with John Dougherty in Rolla, he is a steeler and runs a CB repair shop and may work on amps. E-Mail me for John's e-mail address (he posts on the forum).

Hi Jack good to hear from you
I've visited your great web site many times. As for looking like the Pepper Brother all I can say is I fell sorry for him. I still use the old peavey tubefex so I use your fex listings.
I'm glad to hear that there is oil in the capacitors. My question now is how do you check the oil level and how often should you change the oil and filter?

Correction: You said they have not used Oil in capacitor in years so my amps don't have them and my above question would only apply to those persons with those old amps.

Change your oil every 3000 to 5000 miles, if you gig alot you may want to change it under 3000. You can check your oil level in the back of your amp by pulling out the dip stick. I would suggest to take your amp to Jiffy Lube and let professionals handle it.

Hey Paddey and A.J.
I just located the electrolytic filter cap on the schematic and if I can get the cap off I'll find out what kind of filter it takes and I'll be well on my way to to a speedy recovery. If not I'll have to go back to my Fender tube amps but first I'll have to get one of them fixed or a Tubal Ligation depending on whether it's male or female but don't get me started.

I owed an old old Rambler. I don't know about turning the battery on it side but I do know the car looked like a upsidedown bathtub with wheels. Had a lot of fun in that car

Just a word of warning, always unplug the amp before pulling out the dipstick.

If you think it sounds good on it's side, try it upside down!! The lows notes come out louder cause they're on top now, and the highs smooth out cause they bounce off the carpet!!

Hey Howard
Someone told me I need to change my amps polarity. Crips now I've got to go out and get four quarts of polarity.

I don't think thats gonna work!
I'm seated in front of that amp and you can guess what else the lows would bounce off of.

I'd switch to full synthetic oil in those caps amigo. It's good stuff, has kept my old Cherokee running for 338K miles and counting!

OK Dennis
I believe that story like I believe the one a guy told me about having synthetic oil wells on his property and they paid better because synthetics were higher priced.

I'm not sure if this is humor or slander.

I don't want a call from a lawyer telling me which it is, so I'm closing it.

Please avoid Humor in this section. There's always someone who'll believe you, and damage something.
