Ron:
Sargent recorded in the 40s with Jack Rivers and I think with Jack's brother Texas Jim Lewis as well. As far as I know, he had the original recording of "Draggin' The Steel", which is something of a minor western swing standard. His recording of "Sargent's Stomp" with Jack Rivers, circa 1946, has been reissued and was posted on the Steel Guitar forum by Walter Stettner within the last month or so.
He recorded 2 or 3 78s under his own name, including "Steel Guitar Boogie", which I think has been reissued.
He was a member of Eddie Cletro's band in Southern California in the mid 50s. I have lost track of him after that time, but I know that Joaquin knew of Sargent working with a Hawaiian band in LA as well, quite possibly in the 60s or later.
You can get a fair look at a picture of him on a recent Bear Family CD. I assume he plays on that CD as well, but I have not heard it.
His style is rather generic and doesn't sound at all like Joaquino to me, but then no one does. |
