Over the years people seem to have gotten the impression that a non-pedal steel guitar was just a forgotten step in the evolution of the pedal steel guitar. It has now become obvious to all that the non-pedal steel guitar is not only going to be here forever, but has made a tremendous comeback in popularity over the past 15 years. It is an instrument alone unto itself.
Pop and rock players may have led the way but the beautiful Hawaiian and country sounds seem to be also making a resurgence in popularity as well.
The steel guitar forum is wrought with players that obviously love their non-pedal guitars. The sharing of knowledge and camaraderie seems to be growing on this forum daily. The CD named "Legends Of The Lapsteel" has done very well in sales as it should have. I was astounded at the playing abilities of the players on this great CD and look forward to any CDs that this label may feel fit to release.
Another thing that has astonished me is how the most famous of players such as Tommy White, Maurice Anderson, Doug Jernigan, Randy Beavers and Tom Morrell have taken to non-pedal guitar and play it like it had never been played in the 40's and 50's.
Any pedal players reading this who do not have a lapsteel need to think about what lapsteel has to offer, it's lightweight portability and it's cool factor after your proficiency is attained. What can be gotten out of this instrument in the hands of a proficient player is astounding.
As you know, this isn't something you can just sit down immediately and start playing and be it's master just because it's smaller and easier to carry than your pedal guitar is, but you will find, along with the beginners on this instrument, that the rewards in becoming proficient, will be great indeed.
How many of you have noticed recently, the manufacturers that have come on board and are making quality instruments, the likes of which have never been seen before?
The Sierra 8 string, the Remington and most of all, the incredible new, high quality MSA Super Slide can be had in any configuration you want.
Manufacturers seem to believe, as I do myself, that the future of non-pedal guitar is a great one. How can you argue with the lapsteel all over the Sponge Bob Square Pants cartoon? I'm hearing non-pedal guitar all over international television commercials everyday.
Many different styles can and are being played on these guitars from the older Joaquin Murphy, Noel Boggs and Jerry Byrd, to David Lindley and Jerry Douglas and a crop of great new players from Texas to the West Coast in this day and time. I, myself, lean toward the finger/thumb style playing.
As we all know, the $10 lapsteel found at the yard sale is a thing of the past. Multi-neck Fenders, Gibsons and Rickenbackers of the 50's have gotten very expensive. I'm sure this is why manufacturers of today have decided to get into this market with quality products. I think we will all benefit from their interest in supplying us in this market.
So far in this newsletter, I have been talking about non-pedal guitar for the professional or already experienced pedal player. This instrument is also being accepted with wide open arms by the new wannabe musician who has played nothing in the past. I do highly recommend this as a first instrument for anyone wishing to step into the music arena. It's beauty of tone, portability, size, weight, availability and low price make it a wonderful instrument to start with".

Wow George, thank you for posting the news letter on this forum. This is exactly how I feel, I love this instrument and so do thousands of others, obviously.
This letter goes out to over 30,000 music folks all over the world. Now George, you have added another several thousand, thank you.
I'm so proud to have so many fellow friends that also love this beautiful instrument. I will be doing many more write-ups on non-pedal steel in the future.
I have had a life time of pleasure brought on by this wonderful instrument, and am so glad that I have so many friends with which to share this love.
Thank you guys.

Bobbe,
Your newsletter is always appreciated. This one in particular resonates with so many of us.
The truth be known, I learned about C6 and tricks (for want of a better term) some time ago, from you.
That's right, both of your non-pedal C6 video tapes with your Shobud non-pedal D8 really got me moving forward. So you know of what you speak.
Moreover, your non-pedal CD that you sent with the tapes was greatly enjoyed. I am doing some of the munbers on it and having more fun working on these songs..
I'm not doing a commercial for you,....It's just the truth.
If you would/could do another CD non-pedal with some selected classic songs that would be great. My request would be "I love you so much it hurts" and a "Crazy" non-pedal version, etc. TX
rgds,
Ron

Ron, your request will be answered, soon, because these are two of my favorite songs to play. Actually, I'll be playing both of these tunes on my Chattanooga show next weekend on my '51 triple neck "8", Bigsby, non-pedal steel. Then some others on my "Super Slide".
I can't thank you enough for the nice words, in my work, I get very little feed back and this was a very welcome post!

Bobbe, that was beautiful!
"Pure Steel Guitar" - I love that . .
And I second what Ron said about your non-pedal videos - they are definitely a valuable resource. That C6/FMaj7th tuning you use is very cool. Any steel player who doesn't have those videos is missing a few tricks!
Thanks so much Bobbe!

Bobbe, are those videos still available?
Also, when you consider the price of a decent acoustic guitar, the Super Slides are very reasonable. When are they going to make a Double-8? |

I've enjoyed your non-pedal videos Vol. 1&2 also. Lots of tips and tricks that work. These are no nonsense videos that get right down to the business of teaching steel guitar. My only request is for another video that includes some Hawaiian songs also. Suggested songs (hint, hint): Beyond The Reef, The Hawaiian Wedding Song, Blue Hawaii,& Sand.
Tab doesn't work for me all that well. These videos do are the best thing going. Thanks |
