A new, and excellent, book out called "Guitar: An American Life" has a brief description of our instrument I thought I'd share:

"...the result was the pedal steel, the most complex and demanding form of guitar, burdened with with an almost infinite number of strings set in algebraically complex tunings in an effort to make the instrument sound sweet and simple. A commonly used form of steel had two necks, one tuned to chromatic E9 and the other to an extended C6. "Learning a pedal steel", said Marc Horowitz, who played steel professionally in New York for several years, "is like trying to be a log-roller while juggling full glasses of cognac and whistling Dixie naked"."

Whew! Nice to know my clumsiness is expected Very Happy At least we're recognized.

Nothin' to it... All that is missing is a Head's Up Display to read altitude, bearing, and crash speed...

Oh, and while yer playin', picking, singin', twistin' and contortin', read this newspaper...
