What recordings can I buy where the Steel Guitarist makes use of the tunable split? I'm talking about the split that lowers string 6 from G# to F# with the RKL and brings it back to G with pedal 2 (G# to A). Also on the same RKL, some also have the 2nd string going from Eb to E and 1st string going from F# to G#. I'm getting a new Steel with this change and I have to bring myself up to speed with this new (new to me) change. TIA |

John Hughey uses the split in the intro to Look At Us.
John's recordings with Vince Gill would also be a good place for you to hear those 1st and 2nd string raises.
Have fun! _________________ Tony Rankin |

It's been a while since I heard it, but if I recall correctly, Tom Brumley plays the solo on Dwight Yokum's "I Sang Dixie". And again, If I recall correctly, you can hear the split tuning of the 6th string in that solo. _________________ www.mightyfinemusic.com/jeffsjazz.htm |

That's a popular change on the RKL. However, as Paul Franklin points out (what does HE know?), if you separate the 6 drop from the 1 and 2 raise, it opens up lots of possibilities for holding the four chord on the middle strings while playing with major 7th moves on 1 and 2, and other "chord-on-top-of-chord" sounds. You might want to consider this. There's a beautiful Hal Rugg 6-drop move that's been around on You Tube. Happy Steelin'! |

Jim If you separate the string 6 lower from the strings 1&2 raises, what pedal or KL are you putting the 1 and 2 raises on, keeping in mind that you have your 6th string lower on the RKL...I already have 3 floor pedals and 7 knee levers going on this guitar...thanks for any ideas. |

Brad, I raise one and two on a left knee vertical. This works pretty good, especially when I'm using pedals 1 and 2, cuz I can push against them. I had to give up raising four alone, which I miss. Oh well.....can't have everything. |

Jim You might also use a "front and rear RKL"...have the 6th string lower on the "RKL rear" and the 1&2 raises on the "RKL front" and get back your LKV for your E to F# raise on the 4th string...just a thought. |

Brad, Do you actually use front and rear RKL? I've always figured volume pedal technique is touchy enough without having to coordinate it with moving the knee forward and back for different levers. (I do use front and rear LKL and LKR levers--have for 23 years.) |

Brint, Actually my present steel only has 5 knee levers so I only have one RKL but because I want the tunable split on my RKL and I also lower the 1st and 7th string from F# to F with my RKL I need two RKL which I'm getting on my new Williams Steel (600 series). Your post made me do a little thinking but because I use the RKL and the LKR (lowers 4 & 8 E's) together to get the C6th pedal 5 sound I see no way to better my setup. I also will have two LKL's, one will raise 4 & 8 (E's to F) and the other with raise 1 & 7 from (F# to G). Thanks for any ideas. |

Brad,
Just for general info... Don Curtis has a course on using splits. It's called, "Fun With Splits".
Hmm.. Scotty's call it "Splits In Action E9th Tuning" but I'm guessing it is the same course. _________________ Steve Stallings
