John could swing on C6th with the best of them...….. and usually out perform them while at it!
At an outdoor gig in Aspen one summer, Vince Gill did a show and he and John got into a duel of "trading eights" during Oklahoma Borderline.
At one point, Vince just smiled, turned around, and gave up.
