Hey Bo, I'm in a band in the regular rotation up there. It's an interesting joint, ejoy the view!!! Also, if you're staying over, the Antietam battlefield is less than 15 miles from there. |

HI Chris, I just got back home from my first trip to the Cantina West.. do they import all the hot babes to Hagerstown or is it the water? Normally you only get to see that much skin at the beach.
It is a pretty nice joint and we played to a packed house both nights. We will be going back and also to the Cantina East in Baltimore and a couple other places the agent books. _________________ Bo Borland

Cantina East is the same way. I always play poorly at both houses cause I'm not concentrating on what I SHOULD be concentrating on. I'll try to make it out when you're playing East if I'm not already working, I only live 25 miles from there. Please be sure to either post or send me an e-mail a week ahead of time. Thanks!!! |

Brain, your repertoire must accommodate line dancers ALL NIGHT LONG and you need to know the titles of ALL the current line dances. That way while you are announcing the name of your next tune, you can throw in there, "Ok folks, the latest line dance, Puke...5...6...7....8. Also, no more than 3 seconds between tunes and most importantly, leave your wife or girlfriend at home. Or both, depending on your standard of living. If this kind of muZac isn't your cup of tea, the scenery will make up for it. If your band has no preference where you set up, get there early to plop yourself down close to the edge of the stage as you can. Sitting in the back may frustrate you by blocking your view especially if you're sick of playing Donky De Ponk. You might need to do some politicking by hanging out there, tipping heavily and getting to know whos who before you submit a promo pack. One last thing, bring along an air compressor, your guitar will be saturated with dancing dust from the top and inside the belly. BTW, break time muZac there is three times louder than my wife's best screaming session(s). |

Gary, That all sounds a bit too cynical to me. There are no grand illusions as to what we do there or the reason we play joints like this. It is show business after all , not show art.
We do it because we like to play, be creative, and make some bread. Cash is king!
I don't have to love the tunes, I don't have to play them note for note. I get to study the steel techniques of the best session players today and I get to play what ever I want or feel.
The band wants me to set up on the front line, they love the steel, appeciate what I add to the mix & want me to seen and heard. The lead guitar player might get the babes but I get the compliments about my playing and it drives him crazy. Many of the bands don't even have a steel player, so I feel pretty lucky.
We have a 2005 grammy nominated independent cd out, not that it means all that much. The booking agent for the joint heard about us and called us. We played some of our own stuff and lots of everyone elses tunes for 2 nights, got paid and went home.
We got great reviews from the agent, the staff, and the regulars, got booked back there and at the other clubs the agent books in Hanover MD. & Alexandria Va. Pretty good weekend for a steel player I think. _________________ Bo Borland

Bo, I was with the Jay Henley Band, Chris's current gig, and I worked the Cancun in Glen Burnie. Playing current radio hits and up to date line dances were the main reasons why Jay's band was, and still is booked consistently at both locations. Jay is familiar with the line dance titles too. I haven't had the pleasure of playing the Hagerstown location nor do I know if the same playing requirements are SOP there. As far as being cynical, I can only summarize the following. I stopped listening to country music radio a very long time ago. Once in a while a good recent release will come by my way, but that and $1.10 plus tax won't get me a medium coffee anymore. I don't miss the line dancers or the wood floor dancing dust. I avoided the extremely loud break time muZac by running across the street to gorge on some extra spicy dough filled meat patties. I did return to the club at least 5 minutes before we went on, the pounding of the bass speakers blew most of the dust off my cloths, bad sinuses too, dontchaknow! Bo, are you coming to the Vienna show this weekend? They have some slots open if you wanna play.

Gary, I can understand where you're coming from. The whole line dance thing and dance instructors don't do it for me either, but I like to play honky tonk joints. I like a good shuffle as much as the next steel player. I know all those old tunes but I don't get paid to play them. I also never spent much time learning all those old instrumentals and just started on the Cneck after spending 30 years on the E neck. I hope to live long enuf to get a handle on it.
I was at the Vienna show last spring and had a great time. Your sets were very good as were lots of others. I have too many other obligations going this weekend so I don't think I will be able to make it this year. _________________ Bo Borland
