Looks cherry, and the 8 & 7 combo is neat. But, realistically, it's only worth about 1/5th of what he's askng. |

Ridiculous. I guess GC isn't the only seller that is completely insane.

It's roughly double, which is more like 10 times what it's worth!
If you take the "P" away from his eBay handle that about says it all . . . |

These pre-war Console Grandes did not incorporate neck switches into their circuits. The chrome contraption (actually, it's nickel) that you see there is a mute which when pulled into position, completely deadens the string vibration of the selected neck so as to prevent overtones from feeding into the pickup on the live neck being played. Low tech at it's best! |

I'm astonished at this. I know that the market is pretty good (fat chance of me laying my hands on one at the moment at the right price!)but even so - I wrote to the seller:
"Can you tell me upon what criteria you've set this price? I'm asking because I've been looking for a Console Grande for a while and my own research puts an instrument of this kind in the £700-£850 range. Does it have a particular provenance or is a specific custom model?"
I've also been looking for a Gibson EH 150 Lap steel - the last one I saw was for $950 (ebay again) and was in pretty poor repair. Can anyone give me a guide about reasonable prices for Grande Consoles and EH150? - Cris |

In the real world, I would venture to guess that $850 would be a fair starting price. I don't care of Jerome Howard owned it.

Couldn't agree more George; doesn't matter who owned it really. I'm just intrigued to see how he justifies that price.... oh, and my 700-850 should have been $'s not £'s |

These are probably really rare outside the USA which might explain why this seller has an inflated idea of its worth.
Also, there are a lot of fraudulent vintage instrument auctions on ebayfrom the UK lately, but they are usually underpriced to entice buyers.

To give you some idea of what a London shop thinks lap steel are worth, http://www.hanksguitarshop.com/
These prices are fairly typical.
