Where does there exist a written history of our instrument? I'd love to have a book with stories and photos.
I've looked on amazon.com and a general google search but nothing comes up. Any ideas? |

I think you're pretty close to it here, minus the indexing etc. I can't think of anything that hasn't been covered. Like I said, minus a detailed index.
I think Bobbe Seymour was or is working on a compendium.
(That's a BIG BOOK for those of you in Keller..)

I was thinking of a topic like this, there are so many guitar books on the history of, but none for steel. I love historical pics! I wonder how it would be pitched as a book. You would have a small group to start out. That would be your biggest obstacle. |

Solomon-that would be a good project for someone. I started steel in 1936. But there are so many gone now that could give a lot of input, like Jerry Byrd, etal..
Eric made a good point about this Forum. Bobby Lee has a lot of historical information in the Archives, and with proper indexing, could make one huge book on steel guitar. Probably the best ever....al. _________________ Michigan (MSGC)Christmas Dinner and Jam on my 80th Birthday.

As far as I know there have only been two books written with photos and info on the pedal steel.
Scotty had one with instructional material diagrammed by the pros a few years back, and the late Winnie Winston wrote a short one. Both books were worth the price of what they sold for. The pictures were great in both books. I think you can get Winnie's book from Amazon.com online. Scotty's great Steel Book is probably still available through his store in St. Louis.
Next, Tom Bradshaw complied alot of historical data on steel players too. His record club of years ago, and his last catalog c. 1996 were very informative.
Other than that, the rest of what you gather would have to be on the Steel Guitar Forum.
THere is so much involved in writing a book. For example, I started a writing my wife's biography, her life story from the Killing fields of Vietmam to the USA, and let me say, it is a monumental and painful task. There are interviews, the rough draft writing, gathering data and photos, locating people who know and making the right contacts, etc., etc.
I recommend all the above to help you on steel history.
I always thought it would be cool for someone to really write the history of all this and include chapters on all the steelers who were there in the beginning. It would be a monumental task and cost a bundle to do it right. I think Tom Brandshaw came as close as anyone in doing this. He was on the right track but for lack of interest or whatever reason, perhaps the ;ack of support or cooperation, and especially the cost, he didn't pursue it further. I for one do thank him for all that he did do for steel guitar. He and Scotty done alot!!!!!
Hope that helps!

I would also like to say that what Bobby Lee alas b0b has done here on hte Steel Guitar Forum is awesome!
All of us owe him a lot too! I think he should be included in The Steel Guitar Hall of Fame already for what he's done by uniting us steelers from the 4 corners and from all over the world. He's like an Abraham Lincoln in my book.
Thanks Bob!
GOD bless everyone and Happy Easter, Passover, and Ressurection Sunday weekend!
