The Pro Platform Stand, at MusiciansFriend.com. (No, I don't work for MusiciansFriend or On-Stage Stands!)
Currently on sale for $29.99. I received one today, and the UPS shipping ran $5.95.
At this price, I was willing to gamble that, with some modifications (even without, I suppose), this might be some sort of a contender for use as a steel guitar stand.
I've messed around with the stand a little bit this evening. Extended to its full height, the stand felt kind of wobbly with my Rick 59 on it. I'm 5'6", and the stand, extended to about its maximum height, was high enough for me to play standing up, but if you're taller than me (which you probably are!), I suspect that this one won't work so well for playing standing up.
But using this for playing your steel guitar while sitting down -- that looks eminently do-able, safe (ie - sturdy), etc.
That said, the hardware, design, etc. is nothing to necessarily write home about; maybe even a tad on the chintzy side. I got exactly what I paid for, but I am not displeased. At lower heights, though, this stand feels quite stable.
I'm thinking of permanently setting this stand's length to something that will accomodate my GeorgeBoard & my 2 Ricks, and then screwing some kind of semi-permanent plywood top to the stand, so that there's a solid base for the steels to rest on. (As you can see in the pictures above & below, the top of this stand is not continuous, so as to allow for adjusting the stand's length.)
Glue some nice, durable kind of padding (foam? felt?) to the plywood top, and I won't have to worry about scratching the steel's underside. Then I'll be good to go!
Anyhow, just thought I'd post a heads-up/FYI/etc. on this stand, as the current sale-price is 50% off MF's regular price and 64% off the list-price (for whatever that's worth) -- a very price for tinkering, modifications (that aren't necessarily guaranteed to work), etc.
I'd certainly be interested in any feedback on possible/proposed/etc. modifications, etc., etc...

For padding I got some anti-stress matting from Lowe's. It is meant for work areas where you are stuck standing for long periods, and sells for about $4 a foot. Afoot does the job fine... and the guitar sticks to it a little, so it won't move. I attached it with 3M spray adhesive that I use to repair cases. My stand is one of those sawhorses that were being written about a few weeks ago. It goes WAY up and is solid as a rock.
