You'd like a video of me playing? Ed, where do I send the money?

This is going to be an informal comparison and not a concert per se, but a video would be cool.

Well, I had been thinking about buying a Sierra lap steel for a while, but I bought a SuperSlide instead, because of all the good things that were said about it. I have the SS now, and I found out that all the good things they were saying are TRUE ! But I still think about the one that got away ! I never get to any conventions, so I'd like to see the two of them compared. I'm thinking they are probably equally good in different ways...

I'm sure of that. They are both extremely well made and thought out.

I've been setting up a good part of the day. Got the Nashville 112 there along with a Micro Cube. I have my Benoit 6 string Koa there already and I plan on bringing at least one or two more Benoits with the pegbender as I've had a lot of requests for that.

I know that Jim plays an Auldridge/Beard model, and I will also bring my mahogony Bobby Wolfe that I may have up for sale. I'll decide this evening.

I've had some requests for the Mars Cat Can, among others. There's only so much I can bring because it's a lot of elevator trips up & down, and parking is a problem. We will be well stocked though.

James, I'm sure folks will be hanging around for a bit, I'm not sure what anyone else will be playing.

Just got back from the slide off and got to meet forumites David Yannuzzi and Jim Quackenbush and of course our host Howard.

We got to hear David's Asher, I brought my SuperSlide and my GeorgeBoards, Jim had his tradewind, and Howard had the Sierra and the Harmos ready to go.

I'm sure others will weigh in but for me the highlights were the Asher, the Sierra and of course the SuperSlide. (we have some fun photos that I'm sure Howard will be posting soon).

The best was the side by side between the Sierra and the SuperSlide. Both very nice instruments and both very different. It was a good side by side comparison because they were both 12 strings and both had Reece's 12 string tuning. Howard liked the string spacing on the Sierra because it was closer to his dobro work. The Superslide is closer to a pedal steel in string spacing.

But I think we all agreed that the SuperSlide won the day for tone and for string seperation. The Sierra is much darker in sound and the SuperSlide much brighter. So for me, the SuperSlide was the winner.

But I did like that Asher 6 string and David has an amazing touch.

I'm in agreement here. I'll begin another thread that will include both the dobro workshop and the Slide Off.

Also, if you ever hold an event, always invite Bill......he brings the beer!...

Yea, I'm a Super Slider myself. I sure do love the quality and tone. I guess I can say that this may be the new standard by which all others will be measured, do I hear an A MEN?

I wonder how the superslide would compare with a sierra that has a MRI pup in it. The pickup is the heart of a guitar and that has a lot to do with the tone. I personally don't like the Truetone pickup in the sierra and I never heard a sierra with the stock pickup. Are the pickups the same in the sierras and superslides? They look alike.

A nice time was had by all ....I enjoyed meeting everyone there ... It was a real ear openner listenning to the various lap steel's ....It's amazing when you set up an amp, and then just listen to the various instrument's to get a better idea of what tone or what instrument your ear seem's to like .... I found the string spacing on the SuperSlide a little too narrow for my taste but the tone, and the feel of it was totally there !!... Great string seperation, and great overall timbre.... Very nicely laid out too !!....Look's like I'm gonna need a custom made SuperSlide ..... The Sierra was a very well made instrument with a good layout also....The string spacing was just the way I like it ....The sustain was also very nice, but the tone was a bit on the muddy side.....It was not a bad tone, just not pronounced and clear....Very smoothe sounding .....I am convinced with the right pickup, it would probably rate right up there with the SuperSlide in tone ....I would also have a hard time ( and have ) putting down David's Asher lap steel .....That would be another keeper for me if I owned one .....It has tone , and playability to the max ....David makes it sound good too with his playing abilities..
My Tradewind was OK in it's own right, but could not compete with the tone of the Sierra, the SuperSlide, nor the Asher ... I'm sure that we will all meet again, and will be good friend's .....Thanks so much to Howard for being such a gracious host to a wonderfull time .....It was a lot of fun, and was much appreciated....Sincerely, Jim

BTW, I talked with Kyle at MSA this morning who told me that the SuperSlide can be set up with any string spacing you like. So if you like the string spacing on the Sierra, they can match that perfectly.
